Overview
The Hotel Universel Montreal is located in Montreal's east end, a 20-minute drive from the city centre. Although it is located outside of the downtown core, guests find the location convenient to a metro station, highways and Olympic Park.

There are 230 air-conditioned rooms at this smoke-free and pet-free hotel. All rooms include free Wi-Fi, a flat screen cable TV, a coffeemaker and a mini-fridge, a desk, a hair dryer and an iron with ironing board. Microwaves and cots are available upon request. Suites may also offer a separate bedroom, an ergonomic work chair, bathrobes, and a 2-person jacuzzi. All rooms are furnished with either 2 double beds or 1 king bed.

Guests are offered free parking, as well as a free shuttle service within 4km to nearby attractions. 

The hotel has an on-site restaurant with terrace called Le Toit Rouge which is open weekdays from 6:30 am to 9 pm and weekends from 7 am to 9 pm.

Hotel amenities include an indoor pool, a sauna, an outdoor seasonal pool, a fitness centre, meeting rooms and a gift shop. 

The hotel is about an 8-minute drive from 2 major autoroutes: the 40 which runs east-west and the 25 which runs north-south. Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport is a 30-minute drive away, and the downtown core is a 20-minute drive from the hotel. The hotel is next to the Olympic Park, the Biodome, the Olympic Stadium, the Insectarium, all accessed in a 6-minute drive or less, as well as the Viau metro station, a 12-minute walk away. The Good
Overall, the hotel received many positive comments in the reviews used for this analysis, particularly from guests who had stayed in the hotel's renovated rooms.

Rooms on some of the floors have been renovated, and many reviewers described these rooms as comfortable and clean.

Many guest reviewers enjoyed being close to a lot of family-friendly attractions and green space, like the nearby Olympic Park, the Botanical Gardens, and the Biodome, as well as several family-friendly restaurants. Some reviewers travelling on business appreciated the convenience of being close to 2 major highways. 

Some guests liked being able to take the metro into the city centre from this location. The hotel provides a free area shuttle service allowing guests quick access to the metro station as well as nearby attractions.

Guests typically liked the value of this hotel when compared to the downtown Montreal hotel prices. One guest was pleased to be able to buy Biodome tickets at a reduced rate from the front desk.

Guests were pleased with the service and kindness of the staff and the free parking provided on site. One guest commented positively on the Wi-Fi service and said it had a decent speed.

The Bad
There were several areas of concern brought up by guests in recent reviews consulted for this report.

The most common concern found in the reviews was with the rooms that needed to be updated. Although some rooms were considered clean, guests complained of dark tiles, yellow fluorescent lights, small bathrooms, dingy and musty rooms and old bedding.

One guest pointed out that the newly renovated room he was in, had a frosted glass door to the bathroom that did not close all the way.
