The Good
Many guests really enjoyed their stay at this hotel. They found the setting quiet and relaxing. The hotel was very comfortable, with a warm and casual atmosphere and many enjoyed reading a book or sipping a hot chocolate or a glass of wine by the large central fireplace. It was a beautiful spot on the river with scenic walks and there were lots of activities available for guests of all ages.
Although this is an older building, guests felt it was well maintained and some loved the historical wooden architecture. Guests typically enjoyed their rooms. They were clean, comfortable and cozy with a rustic ambiance.
The staff were well liked and they definitely added to guests' sense of comfort at the hotel. Guests said they were friendly, helpful, kind and accommodating.
Many guests seemed highly pleased with the food offered on site. Recent reviewers used words like superb, excellent, amazing and plentiful to describe their meals.
The spa was popular and guests spoke highly of their treatments.
Guests liked the area and all the activities available to them and they felt the grounds were quite well maintained.
The Bad
The hotel could use some improvement and guests left suggestions.
Although guests found the rooms comfortable, they also mentioned that they were dark and tired, and some of them were small, with small bathrooms. Also, some guests paid extra for a water view and sometimes found these rooms only offered a glimpse of the river from a distance.
Guests who were expecting a more luxurious room with updated furniture and fixtures were disappointed in the cost of the stay and judged the hotel as being too expensive.
Some guests were dissatisfied with the hotel's overall lack of polish, or with aloof staff failing to supply the expected first-class service of a luxury resort. Some felt there were too many extra fees where guests felt burdened by the cost instead of pampered with care during their stay (some examples: a late check out fee for 1 hr, fees for the tennis court, and a bottle of water was $10).
Although guests usually enjoyed the breakfast and dining on site, they sometimes complained about slow and inattentive service and their meals being poorly prepared, mediocre and expensive.
