The Good
This stately hotel provided a delightful stay to many guests, many of whom came to enjoy the peaceful country setting and the fine dining offered on site.
more Many guests enjoyed their beautiful, very large, very clean and well-furnished rooms. Guests liked the large bathrooms with soaker tubs and bath salts, the wood-burning fireplaces and comfortable feather beds.
The dining on site was a highlight for many reviewers. Guests often took pictures of their meals which were highly refined and artistically presented. Guests used words such as outstanding, tantalizing and world class to describe the cuisine.
The grounds were inspiring. Guests described them as exquisite, gorgeous and perfectly manicured. Some guests mentioned enjoying the pretty pond, the garden and the walking trails.
The staff made their mark. Service received high scores overall and guests found the service to be first class and professional. Staff were described as excellent, very helpful, warm and attentive.
Guests also enjoyed the spa services. One recent guest wrote, "We headed to the spa for a facial, massage, manicure and pedicure. I have had spa days before, but the quality of this spa day far exceeded all of them. Everyone was super pleasant and very very skilled."
The location was appreciated for being close to Hwy 401 and the city of Cambridge, in a quiet setting.
The Bad
Although the majority of reviewers gave the hotel a perfect score in the reviews sourced online, there were also some complaints found.
more Guests who had less than stellar experiences were prone to complain due to the high price tag of a room and dining at this hotel, as expectations were higher, and although the staff did a great job much of the time, they also missed the mark at times.
Occasionally dinners and afternoon tea felt way overpriced due to misses on food quality or temperature, very slow service from the wait staff and small portions.
Some guests who were expecting more for a Relais & Chateaux property felt the hotel was too rustic or uninspiring and the grounds lacked grand gardens or compelling landscaping.
Other complaints found were: poor signage to the property, the driveway had potholes, the restaurant tables were too close to one another, the baseboard heaters were banged up by luggage carts, the Cloisters building was industrial looking, uncomfortably hard beds, down duvet was too heavy, the building looked tired, inadequate fitness centre, no paved access to the dining room from parts of the hotel for wheelchairs, spa facility is tired, and non-pet owners were put near barking dogs in the Cloisters building.
