Overview
This hotel is on the shores of Bras d'Or Lake and has a par 72 18-hole golf course on site. It is open seasonally, from May through October. It is well suited for golfing guests.

Each of the 98 rooms at this hotel has free Wi-Fi, a hair dryer, a coffeemaker and an iron and ironing board. Standard rooms have one king or two queen beds. Some rooms have a king bed, a fireplace and/or a jetted tub. Suites are also available and feature a separate sitting room with a mini-fridge and sofabed and one bedroom with a king bed. All suites and most rooms feature a balcony overlooking either the golf course or the lake.

There are one, two and three bedroom cottages available. One- and two-bedroom cottages share a common deck. All cottages feature a combined living and dining area with a sofabed. One-bedroom cottages feature a double bed and a kitchenette. Two- and three-bedroom cottages come equipped with a full kitchen. The two-bedroom cottages have one double bed and two single beds, while the three-bedroom cottages have one queen bed and two bedrooms with one double bed in each.

Pets are allowed, in the cottages only, for a charge of $25 per stay.

Guests can choose between two on-site restaurants. MacRae's serves breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. They offer live entertainment on the weekends. Guests can have dinner at the Clubhouse as well, which regularly features entertainment.

There are a wide selection of on-site amenities, including free parking, a dinner theatre, a beach, water sports, other sports (such as volleyball), a water trampoline, an indoor pool and a sauna. There are bonfires on the beach, supervised children's activities and regularly scheduled events. In addition to the 18-hole golf course, there is a putting green and golfing lessons are available. A variety of equipment is available for guest rental.

Guests wanting to visit area attractions should make sure they have access to a car. This hotel is located about a 10-minute drive from the downtown area of West Bay. The beginning of the Cabot Trail is about an hour and half's drive away. Fort Louisburg Historic Site, which in 2013 will be celebrating Louisbourg300, which marks the 300th anniversary of the founding of Île Royale (modern day Cape Breton Island), is just over a 2-hour drive away. (All distances and travel time estimates: Google Maps)

The Good
Most of the reviews used for this analysis contained praise for this hotel and guests were most impressed with the hotel's location and with the customer service.

The natural setting of this hotel enhanced the stays of a number of guests. Guests liked the waterfront setting, having a golf course on site and being surrounded with green space. A number of guests praised the views from some rooms and from some common areas in the hotel. 

Staff provided top-notch service, according to guests. They routinely went above and beyond to ensure guest comfort and paid attention to details. One guest commented on how, at check-in, front desk staff provided pitchers of water to take up to the room. Guests described staff throughout the hotel as friendly and helpful.

A number of guests enjoyed the quality and the selection of the food offered in the on-site restaurant.

Guests described their rooms as clean as well as comfortably and nicely configured. However, there were a few complaints about decor and furnishings (see below).

The Bad
The vast majority of the reviews used for this analysis were positive, but several guests had challenges finding the hotel.

While a number of guests liked the hotel's natural setting, several guests said that they had difficulty locating the hotel and thought that it could have benefited from better signage. Some other guests said that the hotel did not register in their GPS, and that they had to circle several times before they actually found it. Some guests said that the hotel was isolated and that shops, restaurants and points of interest were unreasonably far away.

Some guests suggested that the hotel was looking tired and that decor needed some attention. General room decor, furniture and mattresses were noted specifically.

There were some peripheral comments about spotty Wi-Fi connections and about uncomfortable beds.
