The Good
Guests generally felt the hotel was an okay place to stay, but in need of refurbishment.
Several guests considered the rooms as decent enough for an overnight stay. Many seemed to judge the rooms as clean, with old furniture but comfortable beds, working bathrooms, and the rooms were a good size. Some guests had nice views of the harbour from their rooms, especially from the higher floors.
The friendly staff at the front desk helped guests feel more at home. Guests reported getting early wake-up calls on time and finding welcoming and nice staff at the front desk on their arrival. One guest reported, "Great staff, easy check-in. Also got delayed nearly a day coming in due to a storm and the hotel did not charge for that day (although we had the room reserved)." Another guest said the staff was willing to hold his luggage when his ougoing flight was delayed, although he was already checked out.
The location was convenient to restaurants in walking distance, the ferry terminal and handy for picking up the free airport shuttle to Digby Island (where the airport is located).
The food at the on-site restaurant was praised by several guests. Reviewers also mentioned that the wait staff was attentive and that the portion sizes were generous. One recent guest said, "Breakfast is excellent with great service."
The Bad
Some guests found the hotel too old to enjoy. Complaints surfaced on a few common themes.
Guests who didn't like the rooms, complained that they needed better cleaning or better amenities. Smelly rooms, old furniture, ACs that didn't cool, discoloured bed linens, and showers that fluctuated from scalding hot to cold were among recent complaints. One guest complained about a very poorly cleaned and poorly maintained exercise room. Others recounted how housekeeping "missed the ball" during their stays.
Some guests were not that impressed with the location. One reviewer complained of website photos showing trees and the ocean, but the reality was different--the hotel was really next to parking lots, a shopping mall and a loud bar. Another said that there was not much to do even in the downtown area.
Noise disturbance was an issue for a few guests. They complained of hearing street traffic, guests leaving for the ferry early in the morning, rowdy bar patrons on the street, and noisy ice machines that were near their rooms. A couple of guests were also disturbed by noise from neighbouring rooms.
