The Good
The country resort is the perfect and romantic getaway for guests who love gardens and scenic harbour views. The hotel is reminiscent of an English Manor with old fashioned furniture, afternoon tea, rustic fireplaces, and terraces set amid country gardens with winding paths of hewn stone.
more It's a bird watchers paradise with more than 200 species living on the 22-acre property. But that is not all, guests saw sheep, chicken and bees raised by the hotel and wildlife such as deer, racoons, seal and otter. Guests loved roaming the property with many places to sit and take in the beauty. They took pictures of the beautiful sculpted gardens, the country-style gardens, and the stunning harbour views.
The food was top quality. Guests also took pictures of the creative works of art that came to their tables. They spoke of enjoying drinks on the Bistro's patio, as well as delicious meals there.
The free breakfast was excellent, with a different breakfast special every day and a nice variety of choices. Guests also liked being treated to fresh muffins dropped off to their rooms in the mornings and afternoon tea in front of a grand old fireplace.
Many were thrilled with their charming rooms. They found them spacious, well designed and nicely furnished. The balconies and porches were cozy and many offered breathtaking views of the harbour or meadows.
Guests enjoyed the massages offered at the spa and appreciated the free shuttle from the float plane or ferry terminal, increasing convenience and allowing them to leave their cars at home.
The staff was well liked and described as courteous, considerate and professional.
The Bad
Some guests were not completely impressed as they felt that some things missed the mark during their stay.
Some guests had rooms that seemed dated to them (rather than old fashioned). One guest said there was a certain drabness to the furniture, flooring, draperies and bedding. This complaint was infrequent, and may have been focused on certain buildings such as the Manor House, Farmhouse and Churchill Cottage.
While the Bistro was considered well priced, the Hastings House Dining Room was judged as overpriced by several reviewers, although meals were enjoyed along with the usual attentive service.
Reviewers found that although some rooms were wheelchair accessible, it was difficult to get to the dining room for those who were mobility challenged, due to the hilly nature of the property and the lack of railings on the stairs. A few mentioned that the Hillside Suites offer, what might be, a challenging climb up outdoor steps for some.
A few guests said they could hear traffic noise from their room, depending on where they were situated on the property, although this was not a deal breaker. Also some who stayed in the Hillside Suites complained of hearing bar music from a nearby bars on the weekends.
Occasionally guests felt the hotel was overpriced.
