The Good
This hotel was well liked by many of its guests.

Many enjoyed the rooms. They liked the old-fashioned décor, cozy fireplaces and cleanliness of the rooms.

The location was central. Guests found excellent restaurants close by and many appreciated having the Central Station light rail transit right across the street. Guests spoke of accessing downtown shopping, the art gallery, Rogers Place and even the University of Alberta from this hotel.

Staff were well liked overall. They were described as friendly, professional and attentive.

The free breakfast was a hit. Guests typically loved having Eggs Benedict for free. Many guests were also very pleased with a small cheese and fruit platter with wine brought each evening to their rooms.

Madison’s Grill was also very much enjoyed by many guests who thought it was fabulous, with beautiful décor and delicious food.

The Bad
The hotel failed on occasion to live up to guests’ expectations.

Some guests were disappointed by various omissions by staff. These included not getting the room booked, charging a lot of money for late check outs or early departures and failing to deal graciously and effectively with various complaints by guests.

Although guests usually loved the free breakfast, some were very disappointed to have to pay high prices for specialty coffee (having supposed the breakfast was entirely free including beverages). They also complained of inconveniently short breakfast hours and not much selection.

Parking was deemed expensive and sometimes this charge came as a surprise and along with resort fees and taxes caused the total hotel bill to escalate beyond the guests’ expected cost.

Noise was problematic for a few guests. They mentioned noisy heater and AC fans as well as bathroom fans. Some said music could be heard from the banquet hall which was located below some of the rooms in the contemporary wing. Traffic from Jasper Avenue could also be heard from early morning.

Some guests found the rooms small or uncomfortable. Complaints included heavy duvets, sheets that were not soft, uncomfortably firm pillows and mattresses and rooms that smelled old. Some were disappointed with poor views of a cement wall, and desks and desk chairs that were not ergonomic.

Although many loved the dining on site, some commented on how expensive meals were.
