Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ) offers those visiting Toronto the ultimate convenience in travel because it's located downtown, close to all amenities. Those visiting Toronto on business, pleasure, or to access some of Toronto's many health services can save time and energy by flying into this airport and staying in a nearby hotel. These hotels might interest the traveller based upon overall value and their location's convenience.

Travellers should note that the city has recently built a tunnel from the mainland to the island, making it even easier to access this airport, with only a 6-minute walk through the tunnel. Guests who are taking their cars across to the island will still need to take the ferry to the island, which leaves every 15 minutes and takes 90 seconds to cross.

Tips For Staying Near Toronto Island Airport

Location
The Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ) landing strip is located on Toronto Island and separated from downtown Toronto mainland terminal building by a narrow channel of water. The city now offers two ways to get to and from the island airport to board your plane: by the pedestrian tunnel or by ferry.

The new pedestrian tunnel runs 30 metres under Lake Ontario and takes only 6 minutes to cross with the use of moving sidewalks. When arriving at the airport, travellers will ride a long escalator up to the airport check in.

Travellers with cars will need to take a short 121-metre ferry ride to the island. The crossing takes 90 seconds, and the ferry runs once every 15 minutes beginning at 5:15 am and ending at 12:07 am. Be sure to factor the ferry's schedule into your timing. Fares are free for pedestrians and $11 return for vehicles.

Parking
There are three parking options for those looking to park their vehicle near the airport. One parking lot is on the island itself (you take your vehicle over via the ferry for a fee of $11), and two are on the downtown Toronto mainland, near the ferry terminal. All three options offer both short-term and long-term parking, though rates vary by parking lot and length of stay. For shorter-term (30 minutes to up to 4 days), the cheapest option is the lot at Stadium Rd (200 feet west of the ferry terminal at the waterfront). For long-term parking of 5 days or more, the cheapest (and more secure) parking would be the island parking lot.

Getting Around: Free Shuttle
There is a free shuttle between Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (terminal building on the mainland) and Toronto's Union Station every 15 minutes. The shuttle is available to anyone wishing to go to and from the airport, whether or not they are travelling via the airport. For the benefit of its passengers, Porter Airlines also operates a free shuttle to and from Union Station every 15 minutes.

Getting Around: Public Transit
All the hotels in downtown Toronto are served by the Toronto Transit Commision (TTC) public transit service. Streetcars operate regularly throughout the downtown core, and the 511 streetcar along Bathurst Street is a 6-minute walk from the ferry docks and pedestrian tunnel.

Fares are $3.25 for a single one-way ride, and day passes can be purchased for $12. More route and schedule information can be found on their website.

Dining
You will find a self-serve kitchen with free snacks and drinks to sustain you while you wait for your flight. A shop selling sandwiches and other snacks, as well as drinks like beer and wine, is also available in the departures lounge.

Other Tips
Porter Airlines, the primary airline flying out of the Island Airport, really works to make sure that the wait for your flight is as comfortable as possible. A business centre filled with computers makes it easy for the business person on the run to get in some last minute e-mails before their flight.
