Tips For Staying Near Riding Mountain National Park

Location
Riding National Park sits at the top of the Manitoba escarpment in Manitoba between Regina and Winnipeg. The park is protected forestland where the boreal forest meets aspen parkland.

The main town in the park is Wasagaming on the shores of Clear Lake, where a number of campsites, cabins, boat loading docks and stores can be found before immersing yourself in the primitive backwoods. The town is home to the visitors and administration centres.

Getting Around
The park itself is spread out over 3,000 square km, so to plan a trip and orient oneself, a multitude of maps are available for download off of the Parks Canada website, or for purchase in print throughout Manitoba.

Main entrances to the park, where fees and permits are paid, are at the north side on Highway 10 and the east side of the park on Highway 19.

Since there is so much to do and see, a visitor's guide is also available on the website, including descriptions of the park and town of Wasagaming, as well as helpful links to services available.

Areas of the park are accessible by car, and the visitor centre, campgrounds and administration buildings are wheelchair accessible, however, for the best experience of the park, some walking will be involved.

Entertainment
There are many ways to enjoy time spent in the park, from cross country skiing to kayaking, canoeing, fishing, camping and of course over 400 km of hiking trails. The Clear Lake Golf Course is located on the shores of Clear Lake and boating and sailing are allowed on the three main lakes throughout the park.

Fees for entry, as well as fishing and tenting are in effect. Group passes and annual passes can also be purchased. Camping prices vary on the season and whether guests require a spot in a manned campground with electrical and sewage hook-ups or more primitive, backwoods camping.

More information on rates can be found on the Parks Canada website.

Getting Around: Driving
The closest town to the park is Dauphin, which is a 14-minute drive from the north gate park entrance at the top of the park. To drive from north to south through the park along Highway 10 takes 45 minutes, and approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes from east to west (and vice versa).

Highway 16, the Yellowhead Highway, is a 16-minute drive from Wasagaming and downtown Winnipeg is a 3-hour drive away.

The Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport (YWG) is just outside of downtown Winnipeg and is also an approximate 3-hour drive from the park.

Because of the vast number of campgrounds and cabins available throughout the park, hotels in nearby towns are few and far between, so expect a bit of a drive from your hotel to the park. However, these hotels make good stopover options for visitors driving to the park from far away who wish to rest for the night before making the final drive into the park.

Driving times are all estimates to the town of Wasagaming, unless otherwise specified.
