Tips For Staying Near Alberta Children's Hospital

Situated on the University of Calgary campus, the Alberta Children's Hospital specializes in pediatric care for the province, as well as those travelling from southeastern BC and southwestern Saskatchewan. The toy-block designed building was created to promote a fun and child-friendly vibe.
Getting Around

The Trans-Canada Highway is just south of the hospital complex, at a 3-minute drive away, while the Crowchild Highway is just a 4-minute drive west of the hospital. Downtown Calgary is an approximate 16-minute drive away, and the Calgary International Airport (YYC) is approximately 25 minutes away by car.

All of the area hotels are accessible by public transit. Single-ride adult fares are $3, but a day pass for unlimited travel can be purchased for $9. If your child is an inpatient at the hospital, rooms come with a little extra accommodation for one parent or caregiver to stay the night as well. However, the hospital focuses on outpatient care, believing that children heal better at home and not in a hospital setting, whenever possible.

The Ronald McDonald House of Southern Alberta is located across the street from the hospital for families requiring extended stays who live 45 km (or farther) from the hospital. A nominal fee of $12 is required and suites include beds and a private washroom with shared living spaces. A referral is required from the hospital, or another Calgary medical professional.

Inpatient units also include a playroom, often manned by volunteers organizing activities, as well as a movie auditorium.

Emily's Backyard Playroom is located just inside the main entrance on level one for pre-registered child care up to 1.5 hours. The Healing Gardens can be found on the hospital complex, offering seven different types of garden for parents and patients to explore through inter-connected pathways.
Other Tips
There are no visiting hours for family members, as they're welcome anytime. Non-family guests visiting the child are able to visit anytime throughout the day until 8:30 pm.

A pet visiting room is available for children to visit with family pets during their stay. Visits much be pre-arranged through staff. More information can be found on the services section of the ACH website.
The hospital is situated in such a way that views surrounding the complex include the river valley, mountains or nearby Nosehill Park.
Situated on level one, the open-concept Mountainview Café offers health food choices, a sheltered patio and views of the foothills and Rocky Mountains. It's open throughout the week from 6:30 am to midnight, and from 7:30 am to 11:30 pm on weekends and holidays.

Also available on site is the Good Earth Café, featuring pre-made sandwiches and meals. It's open from 6:30 am to 9 pm throughout the week and 8 am to 8 pm on weekends.

Patient meals are selected a day in advance and can easily be flagged for dietary restrictions.
