Tips For Staying In Downtown Kamloops

Bordered by the South Thompson River to the north and the Southern Yellowhead Highway to the south, Kamloops is located in the picturesque Thompson Valley. Whether visiting the city or just passing through, downtown Kamloops offers a good selection of hotels to fit all needs, from business, to economy, to pleasure.

Parking in Downtown
Parking in downtown Kamloops won't break your budget. The major area parking lots cost $4 per day, however, if you end up using metred parking along the street, you should note that there is a 3-hour maximum time limit before you will have to move your car. Since 3 hours costs $4.25, the lots are a better deal. Most of the parking lots are located along Lorne Street, which runs east-west in the north section of downtown.

There are also several parking lots that charge hourly fees, typically of about $1 to $1.25 per hour. These lots include the Lake City Casino, Kamloops Square, the YMCA and several area hotels, including Thompson Hotel and Conference Centre and The Plaza Heritage Hotel.

However, parking at your hotel might be more convenient. A few of the area hotels offer free parking (including the Travelodge City Centre and Sandman Inn, mentioned below), and the ones that charge typically cost between $5 and $10 per day. Our CHG Editor's Pick, The Plaza Heritage Hotel, charges guests $8 per day, while the Thompson Hotel and Conference Centre charges $7 per day.

Canada's Tournament Capital
Known as Canada's Tournament Capital, Kamloops plays host to several tournaments every year, be it hockey in the winter or baseball in the summer. Many of these tournaments involve visitors travelling to Kamloops with large groups of kids, which makes finding a good value hotel a top priority for parents and coaches.

Travelodge City Centre offers reasonable rates, free Wi-Fi, a free continental breakfast, free parking, guest laundry and an indoor pool (to help the kids burn off that endless supply of energy!). Sandman Inn is also a decently-priced choice if you would be happy with basic rooms and the ability to save money by preparing meals in the in-room kitchens. Sandman Inn also offers free Wi-Fi and free parking, although guests should note that it lacks an elevator and has lower guest rating scores.

All downtown Kamloops hotels are within a 10-minute drive of Tournament Capital Centre, which houses the Canada Games Aquatic Centre, TCC Field House and Hillside Stadium. Exhibition Park is within a 5-minute drive of all downtown Kamloops hotels, with Thompson Hotel and Conference Centre being the closest (about a 2-minute drive away).

Arts & Culture
If you're in town to explore downtown Kamloops' arts and culture scene, you won't be disappointed. The nationally-renowned Kamloops Art Gallery is a 2-minute walk from our Editor's Pick for the area, The Plaza Heritage Hotel, and Kamloops Museum is a 5-minute walk from The Plaza.

Business As Usual
Visiting Kamloops for business? You're not alone, and hotels will cater to your needs too. Our Editor's Pick for best hotel in downtown Kamloops, due to its charm and excellent value, The Plaza Heritage Hotel is also well suited to business travellers. It offers a complimentary breakfast, meeting space, free Wi-Fi and a 24-hour business centre.

Looking for an alternative? DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Kamloops and Thompson Hotel and Conference Centre both provide meeting space, on-site dining, free Wi-Fi and 24-hour business and fitness centres. Located only about 1 block from Lake City Casino Kamloops, the Thompson Hotel even has an indoor pool and hot tub, perfect for helping you unwind (in any weather) after you've worked hard all day. After all, you can't visit "BC's friendliest city" and Canada's Tournament Capital, even for work, without at least a little bit of play!
