Overview
The Quality Inn Downtown Montréal is located on Crescent Street and Rene Lévesque Boulevard, in downtown Montreal.

The 12-floor hotel recently renovated all 96 of its rooms. All rooms have free wireless Internet, air-conditioning, coffee maker, clock radio, hairdryer, iron, and flat-screen TV with on-demand movies and Nintendo rentals. A front desk agent clarified that there are three types of rooms available. 'E' rooms offer the most amenities- including a fridge and pull-out couch, 'N' rooms feature a pull-out couch but no fridge, and 'Q' rooms, which do not come with either fridge or pull-out couch, but feature all the standard amenities. For guests who do not wish to pay for the higher-end rooms but would like a fridge, the agent advised indicating this when booking, as a limited number of 'Q' and 'N' rooms come with fridges.

The hotel does not have its own parking lot, but there is an outdoor lot available for guests beside the hotel, for a fee of $20/day. The hotel does not have an on-site restaurant but is within a few minutes walk to many restaurants.

The hotel is about a three-minute walk from both the Lucien L'Allier and Guy-Concordia metro stations, and is within 3km from both the train and bus stations. Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport is 20km away, about a 20-minute drive.

The hotel is within 5-minutes walking distance of the Bell Centre (a sports and entertainment facility that is home to the Montreal Canadiens and hosts popular music concerts), as well as attractions like St.Catherine Street and the city's underground shopping network, the Montréal Museum of Fine Arts, the Montréal Museum of Contemporary Arts, as well as both Concordia and McGill University. Its location on Crescent Street, one of Montréal's most famous 'party' streets, renders it within a minute's walk to numerous restaurants, bars, nightclubs and outdoor terraces (all distances and driving time estimates: Google Maps).

Front Desk Agent (call date: June 20, 2012): confirmed hotel and room amenities and updates.

The Good
Overall, praise for the hotel was somewhat limited, and restricted mostly to the hotel's central location. Many reviewers found the downtown location near public transportation, attractions and services convenient, though not all reviewers were equally enthusiastic about being so close to bars and nightclubs. Some other reviewers felt the hotel met their basic needs and was "affordable".

Guest reviewers who had stayed at the hotel this year (2012) after all its rooms had been renovated, seemed pleased with their "simple but modern" rooms. One explained that "the outside of the hotel is misleading because the rooms are nicely renovated". A few guests desribed the beds and mattresses as very comfortable.

And while reviews of staff service were mixed, a few reviewers described the staff as "friendly".

The Bad
Overall, many guest reviewers expressed dissatisfaction with the hotel's amenities, rooms, staff service, and overall condition. The environment within the hotel received mixed reviews- some reviewers enjoyed the proximity to bars, while many other guest reviewers did not appreciate the noisy atmosphere within and immediately surrounding the hotel, particularly late at night.

Many guests described the rooms as old and in need of updating. However, the hotel rooms were renovated about six months ago, according to a call made to a front desk agent in June of 2012, so it is worth noting that guests reviews written before 2012 may not reflect this update. Some guests reviewers felt that the bathrooms, which have not been renovated, were small.

There were many comments that the staff, particularly the front desk staff, were rude and unhelpful. Some reviewers described incidents where their requests for items such as batteries for the TV remote control were ignored or took a long time to address.

The hotel's common areas and carpets were often described in the reviews as in need of maintenance and updating. In particular, the hotel's lobby, elevator, and balconies were described numerous times as old and dirty. A few reviewers said they found the elevator "scary" and "unsafe". And while many guests appreciated having a private balcony, some said that the balconies were "shabby", and that the doors did not have glass where the windows should be and did not close properly.

Many guest reviewers said the hotel was too much of a "party hotel" and were disturbed by louder guests getting ready for the bars at around 9 pm, then returning at around 3 am. A few guest reviews also reported that staff were not helpful when they asked to be moved to a quieter room or floor. Additionally, some guests said in their reviews that they were disturbed by the noise of construction outside the hotel. A front desk agent confirmed on June 16, 2012 that there is currently construction in the area and they did not know the expected end date.

Of the guest reviews used in this analysis, some reported that they would have appreciated more amenities, such as an on-site restaurant and/or room service. A few mentioned that they would have liked a fridge in their room. A front desk agent clarified that all of the hotel's more expensive  'E' rooms come with a fridge, and that guests booking standard rooms could request one with a fridge, although they are limited. As well, some guest reviewers travelling  with cars found the hotel's lack of parking lot inconvenient. There is an outdoor parking lot next door, for a rate of $20/day, but it is owned and operated independently of the hotel. It was described a few times by guest reviewers as small and "dodgy".

Some guests reported in their reviews that the wireless Internet in their rooms did not work well and a few others said the same for the air conditioning in their rooms.

"It served the purpose"

"We only stayed one night, between two days going to galleries. The room was clean, the beds comfortable, and the desk staff gave us a choice (different noise on different sides of the hotel). The hotel was convenient for us - we could easily walk to the museums and galleries, and to the train station."

"Good hotel to stay at"

"Overall the hotel is a good place to stay at for the price. The hotel is an average hotel. The location is very good. The parking is outside, so if you don't mind it should be ok."

"To maintain control of their level of customer service, this hotel should secure their own parking lot. The current parking arrangement is the only reason I would not stay there again. For this same reason, I would not recommend this hotel to anyone arriving by car."
