Editor's Analysis
Updated Jun 26, 2012
The Quality Hotel Downtown Montreal is located on Parc Avene, north of Sherbrooke Street, in downtown Montreal.

The seven-floor, 100% smoke-free hotel features an on-site 24-hour Tim Horton's restaurant, and free wireless Internet in all its rooms and common areas. Parking is available at the hotel's indoor parking lot at a cost of $18/day including in and out privileges.

There are 140 rooms available in the hotel, 28 of which are executive rooms. The remaining standard rooms feature either two double beds or one queen-size bed, coffee maker with complimentary coffee/tea, cable TV and pay per view movies, as well as air conditioning. Fridges and microwaves are not provided in standard rooms, but for guests requiring either or both during their stay, they are available upon request at a cost of $10 each.

The hotel's 28 executive rooms offer guests more space and come with one king or two double beds. In addition to the amenities offered in the standard rooms, they also feature a fridge and a microwave as well as a desk and working space. Most of the hotel's rooms have recently been renovated. At the time of this analysis, there was no construction in the hotel, though there is some in the immediate neighbourhood, according to a front desk agent.
The hotel is located a three- minute walk from the Place des Arts metro station. There is also a stop for the 80 bus route in front of the hotel, which runs north and south on Parc Avenue, as well as the 24 bus, a two-minute walk from the hotel, which runs east and west along Sherbrooke Street, one of Montréal's longest streets. For guests travelling by rail, the train station is about 2km away, accessible by bus or metro (Bonaventure station). For guests travelling by bus, the bus station is less than 2km from the hotel, and is two stops away on the metro (at Berri-UQAM station). Also at Berri-UQAM station is the 747 bus to Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport, which costs $8. It is about 20km to the airport but travel times can vary between 20-60 minutes depending on traffic conditions.

The hotel's location, close to Place des Arts, means many cultural and artistic events are within walking distance.  Place des Arts is a major performing arts centre in Montreal and hosts many musical, theatrical and other artistic shows and events throughout the year. It is also the site for Montréal's Quartier des Spectacles, or outdoor concert area. In the the summertime, this area hosts renowned events like the Montreal Intenational Jazz Festival and the Just for Laughs Festival. The hotel is also located within 10-minutes walking distance to Mount Royal, which has look-out points of the city, as well as walking and bike paths. It is also within a 10-15 minute walk to shops on St. Catherine Street and many restaurants and bars on St. Laurent Boulevard and St. Denis Street. There are many cafés and restaurants on the hotel street, and a small shopping centre on the corner of Parc and Prince Arthur, which has a movie theatre and grocery store.

In particular, guest reviewers had many positive comments about the service provided by staff and the comfort and cleanliness of the rooms. Many reviewers enjoyed the hotel's central location, as well as the added bonus of a Tim Horton's on the premises.

The hotel's staff, particularly the front desk agents, received many positive comments from the guest reviews used in this analysis. Service was described several times as  "amazing", "helpful", and "friendly". Many reviewers described incidents where they felt staff went above and beyond their duty in helping them navigate the city, make reservations at restaurants, etc. One reviewer commented that, "I felt the staff genuinely cared about the quality of my stay".

Numerous guest reviewers noted that they found their rooms to be well laid-out, comfortable and very clean. There were also many comments among the reviews analyzed that the beds and pillows were quite comfortable.

The hotel's free wireless Internet connection worked well for many guests, though a few reported in their reviews that it did not work well during their stay.

Although the hotel does not have its own on-site restaurant, many guest reviewers commented that there were several restaurants and cafés in the area. As well, the 24-hour Tim Hortons's on the premises seemed to more than compensate for this, based on many of the guest reviews.
The Bad
Overall, there were few negative comments about the hotel among the guest reviews used in this analysis.

A few guests reported that the hotel's underground parking lot, which charges $18/day (with unlimited ability to come and go), was a bit small and hard to get their cars in and out of.

There were some comments from guest reviewers that the rooms were in need of updating and that the beds, blankets and pillows were uncomfortable. Most of these reviews were written in 2011 and a call to the the hotel's front desk on June 21, 2012 confirmed that the hotel has recently renovated most of its rooms, as well as the front desk area.

There were also some comments about the noise in the area due to construction nearby. The front desk agent also clarified that while there is no construction in the hotel, there is ongoing condominium construction next door to the hotel.
