OverviewThe Hotel Lord Berri is located on Berri Street, below Saint Catherine Street, in Montreal's Latin Quarter district. The non-smoking hotel has a bar/lounge and restaurant that serves breakfast and Italian cuisine and is open from 7:00am until 10:30pm. The hotel offers its guests free wireless Internet, as well as free high-speed wired Internet, in all its public areas and rooms.
The hotel's 154 rooms and suites all come with a fridge, coffee-maker, hairdryer, cable TV with pay movies and a desk. The hotel's junior and executive suites are located on the top floors of the hotel and offer additional amenities such as a living room with a pull-out couch and HDTV.
The hotel is located down the street (about a four-minute walk) from the Berri-UQAM metro station, the central hub for three of Montreal's four metro lines. The bus station is also located at the Berri-UQAM station, as well as the 747 airport shuttle bus, which costs $8. The distance from Berri-UQAM station to Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport is 20km, or about a 20-minute drive, but travel times can vary between 45-60 minutes, depending on traffic conditions. For guests travelling by train, the train station is 6km away, about a five-minute drive, or 15 minute metro ride (at Bonaventure metro station, four stops from Berri-UQAM station).
The hotel is located in Montreal's Latin Quarter district, an area with many bars and restaurants, and is close to several Montreal attractions. St. Denis Street, popular for its restaurants and bars with outdoor terraces, is within five minutes walking distance, as is the popular shopping area of St. Catherine Street, as well as the Gay Village. Old Montreal, Chinatown, and the Old Port are all an approximate 15 to 20 minute walk from the hotel (all distances and travel time estimates: Google Maps).
The GoodThe hotel's central location was frequently praised by guest reviewers. And while the staff received some praise for being friendly and helpful, there were mixed reviews regarding service. Many guest reviewers described their rooms as "spacious" and "comfortable" and felt the hotel was good value for money, but reviews were inconsistent in this regard as well.
The hotel was praised by many reviewers for its location in the Latin Quarter, an area described by many guest reviewers as "lively" and "vibrant". Close to popular Montreal attractions and neighbourhoods and to public transportation, many guest reviewers found it easy to navigate and enjoy the city.
Many guests felt the hotel provided good value for money spent. The rooms were often described as "spacious and clean". The hotel was also described a few times as "basic and cheap", which could be perceived as either positive or negative. One reviewer commented that, "if you are looking for 5 star service and amenities then this hotel is not for you. However, if you need convenience and friendly staff then this is a great hotel."
In terms of staff service, many guest reviewers described the staff as "friendly" and" helpful", although again, there were some inconsistencies here. Some reviewers mentioned specific employees and their efforts to help them navigate the city and suggestions on sights to visit.
The hotel restaurant received a few compliments from reviewers for being good value for money and offering a healthy and affordable breakfast.
The Bad
Overall, the hotel received very mixed reviews regarding its cleanliness and staff service. And while most reviewers agreed that the hotel's rates were very affordable, some felt the hotel was good value for money, while others felt that the hotel was lacking overall.
While many guest reviewers, of those used for this analysis, complimented the staff for being friendly and helpful, there were some complaints about the hotel's maid service, with guest reviewers reporting that their rooms were not cleaned, or only partially cleaned, and that guest requests for room cleaning, new towels, etc., were met with slow service.
Many reviewers mentioned that the hotel was in need of updating and that it looked old. There were a few comments about the the hallways being dirty and the carpets stained. Many reviewers excused these factors by comments about the hotel being "basic but cheap" and that "you get what you pay for".
The hotel's parking lot, at $17/day was mentioned a few times as not having enough space for cars. A few reviewers noted that there was a parking lot next door for a slightly lower price ($10/day and $15 for overnight).
Some guest reviewers also found the hotel loud, with many complaints about large groups of students staying in the hotel. Some guests reported being disturbed at night by "noisy teens" in neighbouring rooms or the hallways. One reviewer commented that it is "the hotel of choice for inexpensive group accomodation". This was seen as positive for guests travelling in large groups, but less so for guests that wanted a quiter hotel experience. Some guests said that hotel staff were helpful when they requested room and floor changes due to noise, but a few reviewers found staff were not very attentive in meeting these requests.
Although the hotel restaurant received some compliments for quality and affordability, a few guest reviewers commented that they would have appreciated an included breakfast.
Some reviewers commented that the immediate area surrounding the hotel was a bit unpleasant, and that there were some homeless people in the area, although none reported feeling unsafe or threatened.
