Editor's Analysis
Updated on Aug 21, 2012
Le Saint Malo Hotel is located on du Fort Street, close to Ste. Catherine Street. The hotel is popular with budget-conscious travellers who wish to be close to downtown Montreal.

Guests at this 3-floor hotel can choose a room with either 1 or 2 double beds. All 13 of the hotel's rooms come with air conditioning, a private bathroom, a phone with voice mail and free local calls, cable TV, a hair dryer and an alarm clock.

Wi-Fi is provided for free throughout the hotel, and a free continental breakfast is served daily. The hotel is an older building, and does not have an elevator.

The hotel is a 5-minute walk to both the Atwater and Guy-Concordia metro stations and a 2-minute drive from the Autoroute 20, a major highway that takes travellers to Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport in about 30 minutes. There is also a stop for the 747 airport express bus a few blocks from the hotel. Both the train station (at Bonaventure metro) and the bus station (at Berri-UQAM metro) are each an approximate 15-minute metro ride from the hotel.

There are many attractions and services close to the hotel. Concordia University, the bars and pubs on Crescent and Bishop Streets, and the shops on Ste. Catherine Street are all within a 5- to 10-minute walk of the hotel. St. Laurent Boulevard, Old Montreal, and Chinatown are about a 30- to 40-minute walk or a 20-minute metro ride away. (All distances and travel time estimates: Google Maps.)

The Good
Overall, there were some positive comments about the hotel in the reviews used for this analysis, but they were outnumbered by the complaints.

A few reviewers said that the hotel was good value for money, particularly for guests not requiring much more than a place to sleep and a base for exploring the city. A few comments expressed appreciation for the hotel's location within walking distance of many attractions and conveniences, like a grocery store, in the immediate area.

The Bad
The hotel received substantial criticism in the reviews consulted for this analysis.

Many reviewers described the hotel as "a dump" and said everything in their rooms — the beds, chairs, carpets and drapes — were old, dirty, and stained. Some reviewers who had been assigned rooms on the hotel's basement level described these rooms as "dingy" and "dreary". A few who had been assigned these rooms said they checked out of the hotel immediately upon being shown their rooms.
There were also many comments that the staff were unhelpful.

Although the hotel is located close to many downtown attractions, the immediate area was described by many reviewers as “sleazy". The particular stretch of Ste. Catherine Street near the hotel is known for homelessness, public drunkenness, and other issues.

Many reviewers wrote that they would warn others to stay away from this hotel and to spend a bit more money for other cleaner but still budget-friendly hotels in the area. reviewers ranked this hotel #141 out of 167 in Montreal, and rated it 2 out of 5, based on 63 reviews. guest reviewers rated this hotel 5.6 out of 10, based on 34 reviews. guest reviewers rated this hotel 2.8 out of 5, based on 40 reviews.
