Overview
Le Nouvel Hotel and Spa is located on René Lévesque Boulevard and Saint Mathieu Street in downtown Montreal.

The hotel features an on-site gift shop, business centre, spa, fitness centre, and seven banquet halls. The hotel's restaurant serves a full breakfast buffet (not included), lunch, dinner, and also provides room service, from 7am until 10pm. The restaurant also provides custom catering services for meetings and events. There is an underground parking lot, which is privately run, for $15/day, as well as an on-site car rental agency.

The hotel has 126 standard guest rooms- guests may choose between a standard room with two queen-size beds or a standard room with one king-size bed. There are also 44 studios and 5 lofts, which offer more space and amenities such as a kitchenette (in all studios). All rooms feature free wireless Internet, a coffeemaker and coffee, in-room safe, work space with integrated computer jacks, a television as well as iron and ironing board. It should be noted that the studios are located in the 'Condo Tower' of the hotel, where there is no connection to the hotel's wireless Internet. However, free wired Internet connection is available.

The hotel is about a 5-minute walk from the Guy-Concordia metro station (Saint Mathieu exit), and about a 7-minute walk from the Lucien L'Allier station. It is 3km from the bus station at Berri-UQAM metro station, and 1km from the train station at Bonaventure metro station. The hotel is located just off the Autoroute Ville-Marie 20, which will take travelers to Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport, about 20km away, or a 20-minute drive (depending on traffic conditions). There is also a stop for the 747 airport shuttle bus three blocks from the hotel, on René Lévesque Boulevard and Bishop Street.

The hotel is within 1km, about a 10-minute walk, to the Bell Centre (a sports and entertainment facility that is home to the Montreal Canadiens and hosts popular music concerts), the bars and outdoor terraces of Crescent Street, the shops on Saint Catherine Street, including Montréal's 'Underground City', as well as Concordia University and the Montréal Museum of Fine Arts. McGill University is 2km from the hotel, or about a 25-minute walk. Chinatown and Old Montréal are a bit farther away- about 2.5km from the hotel, or an approximate 30-minute walk- and both are easily accessible by public transportation
(all distances and travel time estimates: Google Maps).

The Good
Overall, the hotel received mixed comments, among the guest reviews used in this analysis.

Many guest reviewers liked the hotel's location, particularly those who had come to Montréal for musical or sporting events at the nearby Bell Centre.

Several guests also reported that they were pleasantly surprised to have received free room upgrades upon check-in.

And though there were some comments in the reviews that the hotel staff were friendly and the rooms clean, these were inconsistent.

There were many comments that the hotel was "basic" and provided a good base from which to explore the city. One reviewer commented that it was a "no frills hotel with a good location".

The Bad
Overall, there were numerous comments, in the guest reviews used for this analysis, that the rooms were in poor condition, the hotel in need of updating, and that the staff were unfriendly.

Regarding the rooms, many guest reviewers wrote that the beds were hard and uncomfortable, the bed linens old and threadbare, and the furniture outdated. Some reviewers wrote that they were bothered all night by running water in the sink or toilet, and there were several complaints about the small, older TVs and the remote controls not working well.

While there were some comments in the reviews that staff were friendly and welcoming, there were many more that described the staff as unhelpful. Some reported poor service from the front desk, and there were comments that requests for assistance, such as to fix the running water in the bathroom, were ignored or not immediately addressed by staff.

A few guest reviewers commented that parts of the hotel smelled badly, or of old cigarette smoke.

There were also some comments that the hotel's restaurant was overpriced, although many of those reviewers also said there were numerous restaurant options in the area to choose from.

And although many of the guest reviewers who had stayed in the larger condo-style studios appreciated the space and kitchenette, there were some complaints that the condo tower was unable to connect to the wireless Internet, and that the wired Internet was a bit inconvenient.

"expensive"

"I find it expensive for what it's worth....also, when we went in our room, we were 4 but there were only two towels. As well as there were only two pillows. But mostly I found it expensive, however, I would recommend it as the room was nice."

"The first night of our stay (saturday the 14th), there were young adults on our floor that were excessively noisy and out of control through all hours of the night, twice they knocked on our door loudly and once even entered our room. We slept very poorly on this night and were very tired for our sightseeing the next day. The staff however was pleasant enough."
