Overview
The quaint and well-maintained Hotel St. Denis sits in a prime location in Montreal's Latin Quarter district. Originally opened in 1929, the hotel has been renovated and offers modern amenities and bathrooms. It is a very good hotel choice for guests who want to explore Montreal on foot, or by metro, and who are not looking for a fancy room or extra hotel amenities such as an indoor pool or fitness centre. It's an easy walk to great dining, shopping, Old Montreal attractions, Chinatown, and the Berri-UQAM public transit hub.

All of the smoke-free and pet-free hotel rooms are furnished with hardwood floors, are air conditioned, and come with free Wi-Fi, a flat-screen cable TV, a Keurig coffeemaker, a mini-fridge, a desk with office chair, an iron and ironing board and a hair dryer. The hotel offers a budget room with 1 double bed, a standard room with 2 double beds and a standard room with 1 king bed. Suites come with 1 king bed, a 32" flat screen TV, a clock with iPod and iPhone dock, bathrobes, upscale toiletries and a 2-person jacuzzi.

Underground secure parking is available in designated spots at the university next door, a 2-minute walk from the hotel, for $16 plus tax, per day.

On site amenities include free Wi-Fi in all common areas, an elevator, a guest lounge with tables and chairs, a pool table, a guest microwave and tea kettle; a sitting area with TV and two computers for guest use (free faxing, printing, scanning) in the lobby, and a more formal meeting or board room.

The hotel is a 7-minute walk to the Berri-UQAM metro station, which is the centre for 3 of Montreal’s 4 metro lines. The Berri-UQAM station is also home to the Greyhound bus station, as well as the 747 airport shuttle bus which runs 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week and takes travellers to Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport in 45 minutes for $10. The train station is 4 metro stops away, at Bonaventure station.

The hotel is less than 1 km away from many of Montreal's popular neighbourhoods, restaurants, nightlife, shopping, and other attractions. St. Catherine Street, Chinatown and Old Montreal are all within a 5- to 10-minute walk of the hotel. Also within a 5- to 10-minute walk are the Grande Bibliothèque, Montreal's largest library, and the lively restaurants and nightlife of both St. Denis Street and St. Laurent Boulevard (all travel time estimates: Google Maps).

Confirmed with the front desk on June 3, 2015: air conditioned, double or king size beds, a mini-fridge and Keurig coffeemaker in each room, jacuzzi rooms have a 2-person jacuzzi, no pets, parking details

The Good
This hotel received many positive comments in the reviews read for this analysis. Guests favoured its location, and were satisfied with the staff's service, and the hotel's overall cleanliness and comfort.

The hotel's location was likely the biggest draw for the hotel. Guests found it ideal for accessing Metro, the bars and restaurants of St. Catherines, and Old Montreal. "One guest said, "Location is great, you can walk almost everywhere. Great restaurants in the Latin Quarter a few blocks away, shopping close, walk to Notre Dame Basilica and government offices, China Town." Guests also liked having nearby access to the 747 bus stop to reach the airport.

Guests typically liked the staff of this hotel and called them friendly, helpful and efficient. Guests gave examples of how staff were able to quickly apply themselves to the need at hand to satisfy guests.

Many reviewers described their rooms as simple but spacious, clean and comfortable. Many also liked the older charm of the rooms, such as the hardwood floors, high ceilings and hot water radiators combined with the modern touches of flat-screen TVs, Keurig coffeemakers, mini-fridges and stylish bed linens.

Several guests liked the cool, cave-like multi-purpose lounge available for a game of billiards, as a meeting place or a convenient lunch, tea or reading spot for guests.

The Bad
Overall, complaints about the hotel were minimal, in the reviews read in preparation for this report.

While the hotel was praised by many reviewers for its central location, there were a few comments among the reviews that the area seemed a bit seedy.

And while there were many comments that the hotel itself was quiet, a few reviewers mentioned slight noise disturbances from within the hotel, some from other guests and some from housekeepers in the hallways.
