Overview
The Hotel du Fort is located on Fort Street, corner of St. Catherine Street, in downtown Montreal. With its location near Concordia University, the hotel is popular with travellers visiting their university-aged children. A 5-minute walk from Crescent Street, it is also popular with travellers in town for the Grand Prix or other events during the summer months.

The hotel features a gym, a business centre, and free wireless Internet access in all its rooms and common areas. Indoor parking is available at the hotel for $23/day. The hotel does not have a restaurant, but does serve a daily hot and cold breakfast buffet in its banquet room for $9.95+tax ($7.50 for kids ages 5-12 and free for kids under 5). Room service is also available from various area restaurants from 11:00am until 11:00pm.

The hotel has 124 rooms, all of which feature a king or queen-size bed and sitting area with desk and chairs. Each room is equipped with a kitchenette and wet bar, including a microwave, fridge, sink, and coffeemaker, as well as a laptop-size safety deposit box, an alarm clock-radio with built in MP3 player, a flat screen TV, and phone with voice mail.

For guests travelling by air, the hotel is about 20km from the airport, and is close to the highway (Autoroute 20) as well as a stop for the 747 airport express bus, at the intersection of Guy and René Lévesque. Both the train station (at Bonaventure metro) and the bus station (at Berri-UQAM metro) are each an approximate 15-minute metro ride from the hotel.

The hotel is about a 5-minute walk to the Guy-Concordia metro station (green line), as well as the Georges Vanier metro station (orange line). Also within a 5-minute walk are Concordia University, the bars and clubs on Crescent Street, the pubs on Bishop Street, and the shopping centres and boutiques on St. Catherine Street. There are also numerous restaurants, shops, and bars in the immediate area. A little bit farther away, St. Laurent Boulevard, Old Montreal, and Chinatown are about a 30-40 minute walk or a 20-minute metro ride (all distances and travel time estimates: Google Maps).

Front desk agent (call date: July 16, 2012) confirmed parking and breakfast services, and free wireless Internet throughout the hotel, as older reviews and the hotel's website do not reflect this change.

The Good
Overall, the hotel received very consistent praise for its staff, rooms, and overall value for money in the reviews used for this analysis.

Numerous guest reviewers described the staff as cheerful, eager, and welcoming. Staff member Yohan in particular was mentioned several times for being especially helpful. One reviewer wrote that the staff were "gracious, helpful, good humored, and made us feel like old friends rather than temporary guests."

The rooms also received substantial praise for their size, cleanliness, comfort, and views of the city, Mount Royal, or the St. Lawrence River. Many guest reviewers found their beds comfortable, and the rooms spacious.

The hotel received praise from many guest reviews for its overall value for money, with comments that the hotel was very reasonably priced considering its location, service, and rooms. One reviewer wrote that, "from the moment we walked in the door we were delighted with the service, the ambiance, the room, the amenities, and, most importantly, the staff."

The Bad
Overall, the hotel received very few negative comments from the guest reviews used in this analysis.

There were a few comments that the immediate area is a bit run-down. One reviewer commented that the neighbourhood is a bit "sleazy" but that this did not present any problems. There were also a few guest reviewers who said that their non-smoking rooms smelled of cigarette smoke.

There were a few comments from guests who would have appreciated an on-site restaurant, although they were far outnumbered by guests who were happy with the on-site breakfast buffet and with the many dining options available to them in the neighbourhood.

Many reviewers said that they had booked the hotel for its location and value, and were aware that it would not be luxurious, but cautioned guests who prefer more amenities to perhaps stay elsewhere. The hotel was described positively by some reviewers as "no-frills" but this may be perceived negatively by guests that like a little luxury. As one reviewer wrote of the hotel, "If you need a calm, safe base of operations, this is a worthy choice".
