Older Toronto airport hotel 9 min to YYZ with free: shuttle and parking, but mixed reviews

This hotel is just off Hwy 401 and offers a budget stay with nearby access to the Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), a 9-minute drive away with no traffic.  A free 24-hour airport shuttle and on-site restaurant adds convenience to air travellers.

All 202 rooms are smoke free and include free Wi-Fi, free local calls, cable TV with pay-per-view movies, a coffeemaker, an iron and ironing board, a hair dryer and individual climate control. Rooms are furnished with 1 queen or 1 king bed. Room extras include a sofabed, a work area, a mini-fridge, a microwave, a separate bedroom, a second TV, a living room and a fireplace. 

Free parking is available on site for cars and oversize vehicles. This hotel also offers a free 24-hour airport shuttle service that operates on demand (guests should call the hotel from the airport). Pets (1 only per room) to a 50 lb maximum weight, are welcome for $15 per night.

The Alder & the Sparrow Restaurant and Lounge, serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Room service is also available. Guests will find some restaurants on Rexdale Blvd, a 3-minute drive or 16-minute walk from the hotel.

Hotel amenities include a fitness centre, a business centre, dry cleaning, safe deposit boxes, luggage storage, free newspapers, elevators, a 24-hour front desk and meeting rooms.

Yorkdale Shopping Centre is an 8-minute drive and Woodbine Racetrack a 13 minute drive away. Downtown Toronto is about a 30-minute drive away and includes the Rogers Centre, the CN Tower, Air Canada Centre, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Royal Ontario Museum and Ripley's Aquarium. The Good
Guests provided mixed reviews overall, but many who stayed at this hotel found it serviceable for an overnight stay and good value at a very reasonable cost. 

Guests who enjoyed their stays found clean and quiet rooms, at a reasonable price, that afforded a good night's sleep. They said they obtained a good shower and had comfortable beds. 

Some guests liked leaving their cars parked at the hotel while travelling. The free airport shuttle provided convenience for them, who found it quick and efficient and some guests said the drive to the airport took 20 minutes. 

Although not everyone liked the restaurant, several guests enjoyed meals on site.

Some guests found restaurants about 1 kilometre north of the hotel on Rexdale near Islington, around the corner from the Walmart, and the hotel was appreciated for its quick access to Hwy 401 and the airport. Some accessed public transit nearby.
The Bad
Guests who left negative reviews usually did not like the older condition of the hotel. 

With regard to the rooms recent guests complaints were: the perfumed smell of the air freshener used, stale smoke smells, hard mattresses, uphostered furniture needed better cleaning, old TVs, old wallpaper, lumpy bedspread, TV not working, heater not working and the need for new carpet and paint.

The restaurant received some complaints. Some complained about the restaurant being open for short hours, thought it was overpriced with good food, or else expensive and the food was unimpressive. One guest said the carpet was dirty in the restaurant.

A few guests found the location somewhat isolated and complained about not much to do in the area without a car.

Occasionally guests complained about the airport shuttle service, which they said could not hold all the guests wanting to leave at the same time, causing them to wait until the next round to the airport. (It seems that the hotel utilizes a van that holds 11 persons.) A few guests complained of very long waits at the airport, from 35 minutes to 1.5 hours.

The staff were not always well reviewed. While some found them friendly, courteous and efficient, others complained of unfriendly, cold and even rude staff.
