Editor's Analysis
Updated on Apr 20, 2012
Overview
The Grand Hotel and Suites is located on the east side of Jarvis Street between Shuter Street and Dundas Street East in Toronto, Ontario.

Facilities at the hotel include parking ($19 per day), a business centre, laundry facilities, an indoor swimming pool, a rooftop hot tub, a steam room, and a sauna. There is also an on-site restaurant and the hotel serves a complimentary buffet breakfast.

Some online sources claim that the hotel offers a free airport shuttle however this amenity should be clarified.

After speaking to a Front Desk Agent at the hotel we learned that there is no free service to the YYZ airport. However the hotel does offer free shuttling to destinations in Toronto's Financial District and that could include service to the ferry ports that service both the Toronto Islands and the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. Service to the Pearson Airport would cost about $20 and the pickup/dropoff point for that shuttle is about a "five minute walk" from the Grand Hotel.

The 18-story property features 177 guest suites in a range of categories. Common amenities include cable television, ironing equipment, safes, and climate control. Rooms also include free Internet access, free local calls, and kitchenette facilities.

Dundas Station (public transit) is about 600m away from the hotel, Union Station (VIA Rail/GO Station/TTC) is about 1.7km away, and the CN Tower is about 2.4km away (distances - Google Maps).

Check in time is at 3pm while check out time is at noon.

Verified with a Front Desk Agent: local calls are free, shuttle serves Financial District and the waterfront, no shuttling to YYZ, and all rooms are suites with kitchenettes.
The Good
Guests that stayed at this hotel were typically quite impressed with the property. In particular the hotel's facilities, the staff, and the guest suites were well reviewed by numerous patrons.

Guests that liked the hotel's facilities often had praise for the roof top hot tub. Many guests liked that they offered what one guest called "an excellent view of downtown." Some guests also liked the hotel's pool and the two amenities were called "relaxing" or "amazing" by multiple guests.

The staff at the hotel were generally well-liked. They were often described as "friendly" and/or "helpful" and one guest, for example, said that the staff were "incredible."

The suites at the hotel had some features that impressed many guests. Some patrons liked that the suites had hardwood floors as opposed to carpets. Many others liked that their rooms had kitchenettes with fridges and microwaves. Some guests also thought that the rooms were spacious.

The Bad
Guests that did not totally like this hotel were in the minority. However there were a few areas where concerns were concentrated.

Some guests felt as though the hotel was in a rougher or more downtrodden part of downtown. One guest called the neighbourhood "poor" while another guest said that the "neighboring area behind the hotel was not so great."

Occasionally guests indicated that they did not like the parking at the hotel. This was typically due to the cost of the service which some felt was too expensive.

The breakfast did not receive the best reviews. Occasionally a guest mentioned that he/she thought there was limited selection or he/she indicated that his/her expectations were not met.
Booking.com guest ratings averaged to 8.3 points out of 10 and the site had 664 reviews.

Priceline.com guest ratings averaged to 9.1 points out of 10 and the hotel ranked 2nd of 81 Toronto properties.

Hotels.com guest ratings averaged to 4.1 points out of 5 and the site had 88 reviews.

Front Desk Agent: local calls are free, shuttle serves Financial District and the waterfront, no shuttling to YYZ, and all rooms are suites with kitchenettes.

Jacqueline from Winnipeg, MB CA rated Grand Hotel Toronto 9 out of 10 on September 04, 2009 Verified Guest Hotel Review

"The front desk was very helpfull with all our questions. Room service was fast. The bed was extremley comfortable and the bedding was so comfortable! The only thing that we didn't really care for was the entrance from the underground parking. It was also very tight to get around corners with very small stalls. The pool was fantastic and the rooftop was beautiful. The breakfast was good with a lot of selection. The terrace was very nice to eat at in the morning. I would definetley stay here again!"

Karen from Elmhurst, IL US rated Grand Hotel Toronto 4 out of 10 on August 01, 2006 Verified Guest Hotel Review

"I reserved this hotel for four nights and left after one night. Although the hotel looked as it was pictured from the outside, the inside was nothing like the virtual tour. The room was about one-half of the size pictured, a real disappointment. The hotel is in the "seedy part of town". The building next store is a rent by the weeek flophouse. We were constantly approached by people for handouts as we walked back from Eaton Centre. None of us were comfortable leaving the hotel after dark as the area was so bad. The staff were nice and the breakfast buffet was better than most."

"Although the staff was extremely friendly, no one at the frontdesk could help me connect to your high speed internet. The toilet blocked and although maintenance did their best, it did not flush any better."

"The hotel was everything you could ask for. All services were made available to us. The room was very comfortable and the complimentary shuttle service was very useful. The only slight downside was the local contingent of homeless people which could make you feel uncomfortable at night. However that is something beyond the control of the hotel."

"It would be more convenient if the Airport bus stopped at this hotel. The nearest stop for this service was at the Chelsea - about 4 blocks away, so within walking distance if the weather is good and no heavy suitcases, but otherwise would need a taxi. Apart from this, the hotel and location are good. I would stay there again."

"We had our digital camera with us and made pictures of what we saw. We couldn't believe it! The closet door was ripped off the wall and screws were hanging out of the wall. We also had "complementary robes" which come with the room and there were stains on the inside sitting part the were red and brown stains. It don't take a smart person to figure out what they were either. Bed linens and bathroom towels also had dark stains. We've stayed in Niagara before and have never see this kind or thing before. We are not rich people but when you are paying over $160.00 and night for a room you expect to get that. We saved for a long time and booked off time for our Anniversary so that we could be at this "9" rated hotel and all we got was grosed out!"
