Overview
Located a 4-minute drive from Thunder Bay International Airport and about a minute's drive to the Thunder Bay Expy (Hwy 61, a major artery through Thunder Bay), this hotel is popular with air travellers who seek accommodation near the airport, or with guests who want to be close to a major highway.

All of the 153 rooms at this hotel have free Wi-Fi, a flat-screen TV, a mini-fridge, a hair dryer, a coffeemaker and an iron and ironing board. Guests can choose from standard rooms (queen beds with a sofabed or two double beds) or suites, which have a king bed, a jacuzzi, a fireplace and a dining table. Pets are permitted for a cost of $10/night.

Renovations to guest rooms and the lobby have been ongoing for several months and are expected to be completed in early October 2012.

Guests can dine on site at the River Rock Bar & Grill, which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, or unwind with a drink and lighter fare in the River Rock Lounge. There is also a selection of restaurants within about a 5-minute walk. On-site amenities include free parking, a gym, a hot tub, a sauna and an indoor pool. Guests are also offered a complimentary shuttle to the airport.

Shopping is nearby at the Thunder Bay Mall (an 11-minute walk). The downtown Thunder Bay area is a 6-minute drive away, while Lakehead University is a 10-minute drive away. Fort William Historical Park (a re-creation of the days of the North West Company and the Canadian fur trader) is an 11-minute drive away from the hotel. (All distances and travel time estimates: Google Maps)

The Bad
While many of the reviews used for this analysis were positive, guests did commonly complain about a few things, including odours in the rooms and noisy neighbours.

A few guests complained of cigarette smoke odours in rooms that had been designated as non-smoking.

A number of guests were bothered by noise from guests in neighbouring rooms, including ringing phones and conversations. Guests suggested that more needed to be done to soundproof. A few guests were bothered by noise from the nearby airport.

Although the hotel is currently undergoing renovations (to be completed in early October 2012), guests said that the rooms were badly in need of updating, singling out furniture, carpets, linens and draperies.

A few guests suggested that greater detail needed to be taken with cleaning throughout the hotel. Guests mentioned dirty rooms and dirt in the pool area.

"ThunderBay Trip"

"We had pre-booked two rooms. The one room for two people was supposed to have two double beds. When we arrived both rooms were with one king bed and a pullout couch. The pullout couch was very uncomfortable!!! Otherwise the rooms were very clean, bed very comfortable and very good location.(especially if you like to watch planes landing)"

"totally awefull stay."

"This used to be such a good hotel. never thought it would turn into this. Beds are so old and linens full of cigarette burns. Doors are falling apart. walls dirty, could not even get an ice bucket and no one there even tried to find one. etc. etc. We were extremely dissapointed about all of our stay there. The location is good (near the airport) but the access to the hotel is not good."

"It was kind of gross that there were yellow stains on the bedspread, and the room was always way too cold. As well, there were bugs in the bathroom that were fairly large and crawling on the floor. Other than that, the staff were nice, and I was able to add another occupant to the room without a charge, which was really good."

"This was a very noisy hotel with very thin walls. Being that it is directly in the flight path of the airport and that it is so close to the airport, you have constant highway and plane noise. I was awakened the first morning by an alarm clock in the next room while wearing earplugs to block out the noise...that's how thin the walls are. Listening to someone else shower in the next room is not an enjoyable experience when staying in a hotel. Also the internet signal was appaling. They advertise free wireless internet to the rooms in the hotel, yet the wireless signal never went above the "very poor" rating for a signal on my laptop. This resulted in being constantly dropped from the signal when it dipped too low. Basically they advertised a service which was useless in the state it is in. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone."

"Outside the front door could have been cleaner. Also, I had asked for a non-smoking room. There was a non-smoking sign on the door but the room stank. I smelt like 10 people had been in there smoking all day. I realized the bed spread smelled of stale smoke. The bottom line: that room stank. Other than that the bed was comfortable, the room and bathroom were nice. My only complaint is the smell of that room. I even kept me awake. This ruined it for me."
