Choosing A Hotel in Sudbury

Quick Summary of Most Popular Areas
Downtown Sudbury: if you are looking for shops and entertainment hubs this is a good area to stay
The Big Nickel: home of the iconic 30 foot replica of a Canadian Nickel and guided tours of an underground mine
Science North: state-of-the-art digital planetarium and 3D IMAX theatre
Barrydowne: home to the New Sudbury Centre, a shopping mall with over 110 stores

Cheap hotels Downtown Sudbury
If you are looking for a city-type atmosphere with a decent selection of specialty shops and restaurants then stay downtown Sudbury. There are a handful of hotels downtown to choose from, however if you are on a budget I'd recommend either the BEST WESTERN Downtown Sudbury Centreville or perhaps the Days Inn Sudbury.

Sudbury's main attractions
If you're traveling to Sudbury with your family (especially if you have a young family) you are undoubtedly going to want to check out both Science North and the Big Nickel. Science North is home to a 3D IMAX theatre, live science shows and a fancy-pancy planetarium to indulge your inner science nerd. If being close to this is important then check out Holiday Inn Hotel and Suites Sudbury or for a cheaper (and even closer) option Travelodge Hotel Sudbury Paris Street (this is also the closest hotel to the hospital for those prone to accidents).

The Big Nickel is exactly what is sounds like, a giant replica of the Canadian coin. Once the novelty of that wears off after about 20 seconds you can check out Dynamic Earth for a first-hand look at how the mining industry works 7 stories below the surface at Vale Chasm.

How to get around Sudbury
Sudbury is big. Seriously it's huge, at over 3300 square kilometres in size it is the largest city (geographically speaking) in Ontario. If you are going to be moving around it's best to drive. However, if you don't have a car you have the option of the public bus system and something called the Trans Cab Service that will pick you up from wherever you are and take you to the nearest bus stop on your desired root.

Need to go shopping?
Barrydowne is an area a bit northeast of downtown and is home to the New Sudbury Centre shopping mall. There are a handful of hotels around this area, however I would not recommend staying around here unless you have business, family or some other good reason to be here. The shopping centre alone is not worth staying in this area. When was the last time you heard someone telling you they were travelling to Sudbury for the awesome shopping? Right...

Surrounding Area
If you are the outdoors type then you'll enjoy the fact that Sudbury is surrounded by 9 provincial parks, roughly within a 90 minute (or less) drive. Most notably, Killarney Provincial Park is about 90km southwest of Sudbury.
