The Good
The most complimented aspect of this hotel was the customer service provided by the front desk staff. Most reviews, of those used for this analysis, described the staff as friendly and efficient. Several guests mentioned that staff gave excellent recommendations for restaurants and attractions, while also providing local maps and directions. One reviewer made the following compliment: "hotel staff are extremely friendly and will do whatever it takes to make you happy."

Many reviewers described their rooms as clean. A couple of guests also found their rooms well appointed. A few recent reviewers (March and April 2012) mentioned that some guest rooms were undergoing repairs during their stay.

The food quality at the on-site restaurant, Southern Cross and Grill on Queen, was a source of several guest compliments. One guest described the menu as "inventive", while another guest was impressed with the efficient service.

Several reviewers found this hotel to offer good value for the money they paid. A few guests found the room rate less expensive than other nearby properties.

The location of this hotel was also praised by some guests. Reviewers found the hotel convenient for travel to destinations within the business district and Parliament Hill. However, as described below, not all guests found this location ideal for sightseeing.

The Bad
The on-site parking facility, noise disturbances, and lack of general maintenance were the primary sources of concern among negative guest reviews.

Many guests expressed frustration with the size of the underground parking facility and the narrow spaces. Several other reviewers found the parking fees expensive. One guest, who was unable to find a parking space, complained that the staff were not able to offer alternative parking options.

There were numerous sources of noise disturbances described in many guest reviews. Several reviewers complained about hearing guest conversations or televisions from neighbouring rooms. A few guests were disturbed by slamming doors, while others were disturbed by street traffic (snow removal trucks, garbage trucks and buses). A couple of reviewers mentioned that their rooms overlooked a restaurant with an outdoor patio and they stated that noise from that establishment was at times a nuisance.

Many reviews stated that this property was in need of upgrades and/or repairs. Several guests described worn carpeting and window coverings, Sleep Number mattresses not in working-order, old televisions, unreliable elevator service, and dim lighting. A few reviewers also reported a lack of hot water in their bathrooms in the morning and evening. Several guests also found their rooms to be small and cramped.

As mentioned above, some guests had differing opinions about the location of this property. While some guests found the hotel conveniently located for walking to Parliament Hill, other tourist attractions (such as the Rideau Canal and Byward Market) were found to be too far to access on foot.

"Renovation"

"HI. Firstly the booking agent was great. The front desk was professional, efficient and fun. The street renos and street sweeping at night was out of your control. One thing - I worked in many hotels and restaurants. I always found the odour of the kitchen could be allowed to permeate public/guest areas. That phenomenon exists in your hotel. I believe that addressing that issue will have recognizable benefits for your hotel."

"We were given a room that had a broken air conditioner. Some came up to look at it. It stil didn't work. We called again and were then given a different room. I think that they would have known that this was broken befor 11 at night."

"Don't accept a room too close to the ice machine. If anyone uses it during the night (and someone always will) it will keep you awake for a long time."
