Editor's Analysis
Created: Feb 2, 2012
Overview
The Howard Johnson Inn Kingston is a no frills accommodation that most guests felt was a good value for the money paid considering the relatively close proximity to the downtown core of Kingston. Ratings were not overly high, however praises were fairly consistent. This property averaged just over 6 out of 10 points (on 10 point scales) and 3.5 out of 5 points (on 5 point scales).
The Good
Regardless of positive or negative review, it was apparent that among most guest reviews there was a consensus regarding the customer service. Many guests from multiple sources pointed out that the staff were excellent and extremely accommodating. The room cleanliness was a consistent praise as well. Even some reviewers that criticized the rooms for being basic and boring went on to say they felt the rooms were quite clean. Reviewers were also quick to point out that this property was a great value for the money paid. While the property was described as a basic and no frills accommodation, many were pleased with the money spent considering the location and the price of other hotels in the area. Comfortable beds and a reliable free wireless Internet connection were also positives.

The Bad
Numerous complaints arose regarding the fact that guests were not able to control the temperature in the room. According to a variety of accounts, the temperature control is done at the front desk for the entire property, which made it a somewhat uncomfortable night for those unhappy with the temperature setting. In addition, according to some reviewers on CanadianHotelGuide.com and Orbitz.com, the rooms were a bit basic and plain. Finally, the first impression of the property was a bit negative according to a few reviews across multiple sources. Apparently the exterior is a bit dated and rough (however those same reviewers were quick to mention that the newly renovated interior of the room was a pleasant surprise).
I checked out the following sources for this analysis, here’s what I found...

CanadianHotelGuide.com guest review comments praised more than they complained about this property, however their numerical rankings do not seem to tell the whole story as this property only averaged 6.4 out of 10 points and was one of the lowest rated hotels in Kingston at the time of writing.

Expedia.com reviews averaged 3.5 out of 5 points with 85% of guests recommending this property at the time of writing. Most reviews were positive and mentioned the price paid was a good value considering the quality of the accommodations.

TripAdvisor.com reviewers generally enjoyed their stay and thought this property was a pretty good choice when staying in Kingston on a budget. Many said they would return for a repeat visit. Average guest reviews were 3.5 out of 5 points.

Orbitz.com employs a 5 point scale. At the time of writing average reviews were 3.2 out of 5 points with most reviewers stating this property was a good value for the money paid.

"Overall okay, but would not return to this hotel."
"Very poor first impression. Very friendly staff though. Room undergoing renovations, but not yet complete as there were lots of loose ends to be finished. Room was hot as A/C was not located in a good spot - off near the bathroom and not the beds. Did not feel 100% safe as there was no latch on the door. I felt it was priced way too high for the location."

Verified Guest from Pakenham, ON CA rated Howard Johnson Inn Kingston 7 out of 10 on June 12, 2011 Verified Guest Hotel Review

"Suitable for an overnight stay in Kingston. Close to downtown"
"The room was very clean and the bed was comfortable. It seemed very quiet - no people talking loudly, no kids running up and down the walkways in front of the rooms. The reception people were very friendly and helpful. The only complaints were the air conditioner was very noisy and the shower head would not stay where it was supposed to. Something was loose in the connections. Location was good."

Annamarie from Victoria Harbour, ON CA rated Howard Johnson Inn Kingston 2 out of 10 on June 10, 2011 Verified Guest Hotel Review

"Okay price but not great"
"The room was possibly under construction, not sure, but beds were okay. Air conditioner too small and out of reach for the room, never cooled the room, room was damp and musty smell. Appeared clean but bathroom needed total renovation, tub stained and very cramped. When you sat on toilet your leg brushed the wall. YUK"

Wilda from Blue Mountains, ON CA rated Howard Johnson Inn Kingston 8 out of 10 on February 13, 2011 Verified Guest Hotel Review

"The only reason why we couldn't give this hotel a near perfect was that the room heat is not controllable in the individual rooms. we phoned the desk but there nothing they could do as other rooms had already phoned to say they were cold!! so all we could do was open the window. this is not good environmentally nor cost efficient. when next we go to kingston we will definitely make our reservation at this howard Johnson's, if possible."

"bare-bones and dated, but clean"
"The hotel is more a motel. Pretty bare-bones and dated but clean and relatively convenient. It's located a short cab ride from downtown. Beds were very comfy. If you just need a place to sleep it's fine and the price is right. No food available, though room has a fridge."

"There was much noise from a soccer team and broken windows and police involvement....not my idea of a place to stay in the future. Sorry."
