Overview
The Howard Johnson Inn Kingston is a no frills accommodation that most guests felt was a good value for the money paid considering the relatively close proximity to the downtown core of Kingston. Ratings were not overly high, however praises were fairly consistent. This property averaged just over 6 out of 10 points (on 10 point scales) and 3.5 out of 5 points (on 5 point scales).
The GoodRegardless of positive or negative review, it was apparent that among most guest reviews there was a consensus regarding the customer service. Many guests from multiple sources pointed out that the staff were excellent and extremely accommodating. The room cleanliness was a consistent praise as well. Even some reviewers that criticized the rooms for being basic and boring went on to say they felt the rooms were quite clean. Reviewers were also quick to point out that this property was a great value for the money paid. While the property was described as a basic and no frills accommodation, many were pleased with the money spent considering the location and the price of other hotels in the area. Comfortable beds and a reliable free wireless Internet connection were also positives.
The Bad
Numerous complaints arose regarding the fact that guests were not able to control the temperature in the room. According to a variety of accounts, the temperature control is done at the front desk for the entire property, which made it a somewhat uncomfortable night for those unhappy with the temperature setting. In addition, according to some reviewers on CanadianHotelGuide.com and Orbitz.com, the rooms were a bit basic and plain. Finally, the first impression of the property was a bit negative according to a few reviews across multiple sources. Apparently the exterior is a bit dated and rough (however those same reviewers were quick to mention that the newly renovated interior of the room was a pleasant surprise).
