Editor's Analysis
Updated on Feb 17, 2012
Overview
The Econo Lodge City Centre in Kingston is a 2-floor accommodation, conveniently located near Queen’s University and perfect for the traveller on a budget. Unfortunately the praise for the property more or less stops there. Numerous complaints were found regarding a wide variety of issues from guest reviews from all sources used for this analysis. This property averaged roughly 6.5 out of 10 points (on 10 point scale) and just over 3 out of 5 points (on 5 point scales).
The Good
Some reviewers felt this property to be a good value for the money paid. Other options in the area were said to be considerably more expensive. The location on Princess Street was praised for the proximity to downtown and Queen’s University. According to numerous reviews on Booking.com the room was clean and comfortable (however it is important to mention that some reviews from other source said the opposite). For the most part, customer service was said to be friendly and accommodating, however there were a few isolated reviews that gave detailed accounts of being treated poorly by rude staff.

The Bad
Despite some praise, room cleanliness was an issue to some, in fact on more than one occasion reviews mentioned blood stains and cigarette burns in the bedsheets. Broken and poor quality toilets was also an issue for more than one guest. Complaints found on both CanadianHotelGuide.com and Booking.com mentioned the room did not have a coffeemaker, which contradicted what was allegedly advertised. Bedding was an issue, as more than one reviewer mentioned that the king size bed had queen size sheets. There were many compliments regarding the friendliness of the staff, however there were a handful of reviews that gave detailed accounts of how staff were rude and treated the guest poorly. The complimentary breakfast, according to some guests, was bland and not worth staying to eat.
I checked out the following sources for this analysis, here’s what I found...

CanadianHotelGuide.com guests reviewers did not rate this hotel highly. The averaged rating was only 6.4 out of 10 points with complaints littered throughout the guest comments at the time of writing.

Expedia.com uses a 5 point rating scale. Guest rated this property 3.5 out of 5 points with 83% recommending the property. Overall, Expedia.com guest reviewers rated this property better than other sources at the time of wrting.

Booking.com guest ratings averaged 6.8 out of 10 points. There were praises for room cleanliness and comfort, however complaints were easily found for everything from the breakfast to the parking.

TripAdvisor.com guest reviewers were not overly impressed with the property. Typical reviews described the property as just OK or had a complaint. Average ratings were 3 out of 5 points at the time of writing.

"Good but not the best we've experienced at the same price."
"Biggest plus was the desk help - very good and found information or got more coffee etc willingly and cheerfully. Room was clean but king bed had only queen size sheets. Bed itself was very comfortable. Breakfast choice was rather limited if you didn't like mini-donuts or muffins."

Steven from Richmond Hill, ON CA rated Econo Lodge City Centre 4 out of 10 on September 04, 2011 Verified Guest Hotel Review

"There were no in room coffee makers. Ice machine did not work. Continental breakfast was very poorly set up and totaly inadequate. Room phone did not work right, could not call out. Tried to call hotel before we came and no one ever answered. Were not happy with all the stairs we had to climb. If I return to Kingston, I would not stay here."

"Night in Kingston?"
"This hotel was in location that suited us well. Plenty of parking spaces, the only thing is that the entrance to parking lot from the main entrance to hotel was not obvious (but once we figured it out, we were fine). Check in was fast and easy. Room was clean and comfortable. Air conditioning worked fine, which was important in the weather we had. Beds were comfortable. Breakfast was basic, but we had everything we usually eat for breakfast. Check out was fast and easy too. That's pretty much it. We stayed one night and left right after breakfast. I would say it's a good value for the money."

"Good place"
"The hotel is excellent for the price and location. Very clean though need to plan for extra sitting area on days when they're booked to capacity and have the air conditioning functional in the lobby and hall way."

"comfortable but bedding cheap and too small."
"It was a chilly night and we had to put heat way up to 78 to stay warm. King sized bed should have king sized bedding. not queen sized. Breakfast was adequate in clean attractive room"

Verified Guest from Orleans, ON CA rated Econo Lodge City Centre 4 out of 10 on February 25, 2010 Verified Guest Hotel Review

"I didn't have a good experience at this hotel. I had to move rooms due to a rattle in the original room I was given, then I was given an uncleaned room, finally settled in the third room. I was woken up at 4AM to the alarm clock in the room next to me. No one was in this room. I had to call front desk to turn it off. To top it all off the banging and clanging of the staff in the storage closet on the other side of my room began at 6AM. Needless to say, I didn't sleep well and had an important meeting in the morning."
