Editor's Analysis
Updated on Sep 17, 2012
Overview
Located on Ontario St. on Kingston's waterfront, surrounded by restaurants and boutique shops, this hotel is popular with guests who want to be able to explore downtown Kingston on foot.

All 95 rooms have free Wi-Fi, free wired internet, a hair dryer and an iron and ironing board. Guests can choose between standard rooms (queen or double beds) or more spacious suites (king or queen beds and a 42" LCD TV). Non-smoking and smoking rooms are available. Pets are allowed for a cost of $15/day.

While there is no on-site restaurant, guests are offered a complimentary continental breakfast daily. There is a wide variety of restaurants, bars and cafes less than a 5-minute walk from this hotel. On-site amenities include an outdoor pool (open seasonally), a hot tub and a gym. Limited parking is available on site for $20/day.

This hotel is centrally located near Market Square, a downtown landmark that has an open air farmer's market during the spring, summer and fall and an outdoor rink in the winter. This hotel is adjacent to Confederation Basin and Marina, from which seasonal attractions like the Kingston Tour Train (which takes tourists around town to various attractions) and Island Queen Cruises (which tour around the Kingston Harbourfront and the 1000 Islands) depart. Queen's University is about a 5-minute drive away.

Air travellers should expect a 15-minute drive between the hotel and Norman Rogers Airport (YKG). Rail travellers should budget for a 10-minute drive between the hotel and the VIA Rail station. All distances and travel times: Google Maps

The Good
Many of the reviews used for this analysis were favourable, and comments about convenient location and excellent customer service were common.

Guests praised this hotel's downtown location, both for its centrality (and the ease with which they could get to shops, restaurants and attractions) and for its scenic qualities (directly on the Kingston Harbourfront).

Staff here were excellent, according to guests, and consistently offered warm greetings and friendly service at various points throughout the hotel. Front desk staff were mentioned specifically and were praised for being helpful in offering advice on attractions and directions. Guests who had issues with items in their rooms (doors not closing etc.) reported that maintenance staff were prompt in appearing to fix the problem.

The Bad
While the bulk of the reviews used for this analysis were positive, guests did commonly complain about aging decor and expensive parking.

A number of guests complained about the hotel's worn appearance and suggested that the hotel was in need of renovations and updating. There was specific mention of worn furniture, window coverings, linens and carpets.

The on-site parking lot was small with limited spaces, which some guests found inconvenient. A few thought that the parking fee of $20/day was expensive.

Some guests complained of musty smells in the lobby and in the rooms.

A few guests found the lack of air conditioning in the hallways uncomfortable.

There were some additional comments from guests who were disappointed with the quality and the selection offered at the complimentary continental breakfast.

"Best Value in Downtown Kingston"
"I would rate the Confederation Place Hotel as a good value. After comparing the ridiculous rates of other downtown Kingston Hotels, this place was the most reasonable. The room was clean and comfortable and we had a beautiful view of the harbour front and RMC. The Hallways are in need of renovation, as the carpets are stained and the wallpaper needs to be freshened. The parking is not plentiful at the hotel itself and you may need to search out other lots which the staff are quite knowledgable about. The continental breakfast is sufficient to get you started but could be better by upping the quality of some of the basics...ex. better breads and muffins. The staff were friendly and know the city well. I would stay here again if I needed to stay in downtown Kingston."

"When we booked we asked for a non-smoking room. I believe the request could not be accommodated (I saw one room clearly identified as non-smoking on the floor, and it was not ours). So we get to the room and the air conditioning is on full blast and it was not quite 60 degrees. We went out right away tio get warm! After the temperature got up towards the 70's, you could smell the staleness of old smoke. A coffee machine is provided in the room, but we had to ask for coffee pouches to put in the room. I think the water is too chlorinated because the tea we made on the first night was disgusting, and then on the second night we made coffee and it was just as bad. The parking attendant was very friendly and had lots of good advice, the young ladies at the desk were helpful (it looked like they were there the whole time we were - pulling in double shifts?). I was disappointed in the room. There was a mini-fridge and a micro-wave and both appliances were at an angle on the dresser, unplugged. It was quite weird if you ask me. Could they not store those somewhere else? Then the room was cleaned but not vacuumed. And we had tea the frist night and the dirty cups and containers were not cleaned. If I am to pay $150 a night I should not have to do my own dishes! We stayed in a motel on prior years and paid less than half this rate but there was a thorough cleaning done."

"The coffee maker in the room did not work. A family member in the room next door did not have a coffee maker at all. On my stay later in the week the room I was in had a coffee maker that worked but no coffee in the basket. I would suggest you have coffee makers that work with coffee provided or not have them in the rooms and remove this item from you list of amenities."

"I was disappointed when we asked Staff what there was to do in the area after 8pm and both people laughed, shrugged their shoulders and said "This is Kingston". So I returned to my room, and took in the Lake View. Also, a coffee maker in the room would be a good touch, although the walk to Tim Hortons was nice in the morning. All in all we had a great trip...thanks."
