Overview
Located on the Trans-Canada Highway, the Thriftlodge Cochrane South may be preferred by car travellers who require an economical hotel along the highway, as well as those taking the Polar Bear Express train from Cochrane (roughly a 15-minute walk).

This hotel has 40 air-conditioned guest rooms, all of which offer free Wi-Fi, cable TV, a mini-fridge, a microwave, a desk, a hair dryer and an iron and ironing board. Standard rooms have two double beds, while suites offer one queen and a sofabed, or two double beds and one single bed. 

The hotel offers a business centre, a hot tub and sauna and a meeting room. 

Accessible rooms are available and on-site parking is free. Cats are allowed for $5 per night, and dogs are allowed for $10 per night.

Terry's Steak House Restaurant offers on-site dining, serving lunch and dinner daily. Nearby restaurants include JR's BBQ Ranch (roughly a 10-minute walk north), and New Mandarin Restaurant (a 2-minute drive). The nearest shopping centre is the Porcupine Mall in Timmins (about a 1-hour and 20-minute drive).

The hotel is near the following local points of interest: The Polar Bear Conservation and Educational Habitat and Heritage Village are a 2-minute drive northeast, while the Tim Hortons Museum (located inside the Tim Hortons Event Centre) can be found 6 minutes away by car. Guest reviews used for this analysis showed a positive response to the hotel's location, value, and service.

Most reviewers were pleased with hotel's location. They described it as centrally located, on Highway 11 as one enters town, and near the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs trails as well as gas stations.

The hotel's good value was mentioned by several guests. The price was described as fair and affordable, and the hotel itself deemed "good for a short stay between destinations".

As of September 2012, the hotel has undergone and continues to renovate their rooms. Reviews (post-July 2012) describe the rooms as clean and spacious, providing a strong Wi-Fi signal as well as a microwave and mini-fridge.

Some reviewers had complaints about the hotel's condition. They mentioned that although some of the rooms had been renovated, the decor, carpets, windows and doors were still in need of an upgrade. It was also mentioned that the hotel's sign had been blown away and not been replaced, making it difficult to recognize.

There were reports of odours in some of the rooms by a few guests. These guests seemed unable to identify the smell, and mentioned that opening windows didn't seem to help air them out.

"Nothing wrong with service, room clean, but in very poor repair...mould in tub area, floor uneven, walls need paint, panelling coming loose, mattresses thin and uncomfortable.."

"Cochrane is a very small town with VERY FEW restaurants. Advisable to eat before reaching Cochrane. Re: the motel: comfortable beds, comfortable pillows, easy to find. Please note that the map online was wrong. The motel is situated on Highway 11 south."
