The Good
There were many positive reviews for this hotel with most guests praising the location and friendly service.

Most guests found the hotel located close to a variety of amenities, including a grocery store, liquor store, farmer's market, the waterfront boardwalk area, a variety of restaurants, the VIA rail station and shopping destinations. Many reviewers also cited that the hotel's location was its best feature.

The customer service at this hotel was also often complimented. Most reviewers found the staff to be helpful and professional. One guest described the front desk agents as "friendly, well trained, and empowered to make things happen quick and efficiently." Another guest commented on the superior service he received in the lounge. He mentioned that he was served by Roy, who has worked at the Westin Nova Scotian since 1963 (the hotel's Roy's Lounge is named after him).

Many guests agreed that their room was clean and well appointed. One guest described the property as "A pretty hotel with nice furnishings. I have stayed here before and I hope to stay here again." A few reviewers were impressed to find LCD televisions in their room.

Guests found the in-room Starbucks Coffee and on-site fitness facility to be value added features. The view of the Halifax harbour and the quality of food served at the lounge were also complimented.

The Bad
Guests who had negative experiences at this hotel complained about extra charges not included in the room price and problems resulting from the hotel being an older property.

Many guests were unhappy to learn that Internet access, parking, and local calls were not complimentary. One guest was particularly upset about paying for the Internet service because he found it to be unreliable.

Many reviewers also found the age of the property a problem. Some guests found that noise from the halls and adjoining units permeated their room. Other guests found it difficult to control their in-room temperature. And a few guests mentioned that the elevator was slow and noisy.

Guest reviews also mentioned that some of the hotel rooms were in need of renovations. A few guests found their room cleanliness unsatisfactory and requested to change rooms upon arrival. A couple reviewers recommended that guests ask for newer rooms or Harbourview rooms for the best experience at this hotel.

Koichi from Tokyo, JP rated The Westin Nova Scotian 7 out of 10 on July 18, 2010 Verified Guest Hotel Review

"Satisfaction but with a tip for further improvements"
"Services we have received during our stay were quite reasonable with our satisfaction. Breakfast buffet seems a bit less attractive but dinner we tried in an evening was excellent. This may partly depend on the service we got from the people who were working at that time for our table. A slightly disappointing issue was a parking. No appropriate information was given upon our check-in and it seems me a bit expensive for a charge of 18 dollars per day in the back parking lot of the hotel. It would be better to offer free parking for the guests."

Terry from Saint John, NB CA rated The Westin Nova Scotian 10 out of 10 on November 14, 2009 Verified Guest Hotel Review

"We were surprised by how nice the hotel really was. For the price we paid you would have expected something much worse but I would have paid much more for a place like this. The pool was great, the staff did whatever they could, 5 star hotel for sure. Only problem was parking since we went during a busy time but there is valet parking available, we just choose not to use it."

"After being moved from one dingy and dirty room to another, and then another, we left this hotel and moved to the Mariott Harbourfront for our stay. I wouldn't pay more than $80 a night to stay at the Westin Nova Scotian."

Peter from Guildford, GB rated The Westin Nova Scotian 9 out of 10 on October 13, 2006 Verified Guest Hotel Review

"You will read many negative comments regarding the service in the Resturant not being up to scratch on a variety of Websites. We read these, but still ate there. However the comments were true, our reception in the resturant was poor and service even worse. Without a doubt the most disappointing part of our stay, and the reason there are not many Excellent ratings. As a business, this is one area which needs attention; it is poorly lit and cold in decor. Service was slow and there was no friendly interation as the staff appeared too few to deal with the customers."

Verified Guest from Cockermouth, GB rated The Westin Nova Scotian 8 out of 10 on August 16, 2004 Verified Guest Hotel Review

"My only small complaint was regarding the label on the bottled water left in the room. A quick look suggested that the water was with the compliments of the hotel i.e. free but it was only after a very close inspection (and having received our bill) that it revealed in small print the cost. Other than that we enjoyed our stay and found the room very comfortable."
