"Room's initial cost was $99 + tax plus $7 for parking. At first glance, the building's exterior lacks maintenance and appears old and run down. The entrance (reception area) is ok. The room (# 608) that was assigned to us was deplorable, smelled bad, appeared dirty with stained walls and carpet as well as dust balls on bed frame. There was pubic hair on one of the blankets and the furniture were of the 80's. The room has obviously not been renovated since the 80's and needs alot of work. There were large spots of mold, rot and even mildew on the walls, ceiling and corner of wall next to the bed. The a/c unit works well but creates alot of undue noise. We checked in early afternoon, put our luggage in the room and left quickly for planned events. When we arrived at the room at around midnight we began noticing the things listed above. We were too disgusted to sleep in that room so we called the front desk and asked to have the lady (Emily) come in and see for herself. She appeared suprised and was holding our bill in hand. She immediately offered us two other rooms (which were the only ones available at the time). One was a regular room two floors below however after a quick inspection we discovered that it was in a similar condition. She brought us to a "suite" and allowed us to look around. It was better... but not to the standards we were expecting a "Howard Johnson" to be in. Emily offered the suite but we were charged the "upgrade" fee. She deducted the parking fee of $7.00 which my bill ended up costing me $144.19 when it should've been $121.00 as planned. My issue is that we paid to stay in a "Howard Johnson" because of it's reputation and we ended up being totally disgusted with the condition that the rooms were in. The mold/ mildew is not only "gross" to look at but it's also a health issue and we are amazed that "Howard Johnson" allows such practice. We were not only given a rotten room we were also in the obligation to move rooms after midnight which was out of our control and to top it all off we had to pay extra $ out of our pockets. Short term that seemed to be a good solution because we were tired and wanted to go to sleep but now we feel that we were ripped off. Especially after sleeping at Country Inn and Suites and were treated like "kings" with free DVD's, free B'fast, free unlimited coffee and hot chocolate, free parking and a large suite with a king-size bed for $94 + tax. Not to mention that their rooms and building are in top condition and very clean. To be fair, the service offered by your staff at the Dartmouth Howard Johnson was very professional and Emily was quick to change our rooms and did it without hesitation. Unfortunately our stay at Howard Johnson is something to remember, but for all the wrong reasons. We will never revisit the Dartmouth establishement again and will never recommend it. Thank you,"

"Disadvantages Using a hairdryer in the room blew a fuse, so we were with out power twice. The bathroom fan was missing, just a hole in the cieling. The biulding is old and in need of repair, brown stains and peeling stucko on the cieling. The room needed redocorating, multi stains on the carpets, old faded bedcovers. The continental breakfast was stale donuts, juice drink (not the real thing) and weak coffee. Better to pass on breakfast. Advantage The hotel is very close to the ferry over to Halifax downtown centre. So you can leave your car at the hotel and not worry about parking in Halifax. Cost is $2.00 each way. There is a Tim Hortons around the corner, which you will appreciate when you see the breakfast this hotels offers!!"

"Our hotel room at the Howard Johnson in Dartmouth had a beautiful view of the harbour and every amenity one could expect, including a comfortable bed. I would definitely recommend it to anyone travelling to Halifax/Dartmouth. The only problem I had was the noise from the small refrigerator during the night. I am a very poor sleeper and this disturbed me. But it would not be a problem for most people."

"Avoid this place. It's dirty and run down. The fan in the bathroom did not work, and when asked for a room with a working fan, we were told that no bathroom fans in the hotel worked. There was mold in the bathroom and leak stains in the the ceiling. We stayed for 1 night instead of 2 as planned."

"the outside of the building was not the greatest. The paint was peeling and it looked like it might not be a very good place. However, the inside was lovely and our room was excellent. The staff was very friendly and very helpful."

"Dear Sirs, It was thought that we had booked two rooms, when only one had been booked - and that booking had been confirmed. The hotel seemed dirty and smelly and generally not nearly as attractive as half a dozen others in which we had stayed including the Howard Johnson hotel at St. John's, New Brunswick. It was only a little after midday when we arrived but the room was not ready - OK so we were early. We needed a pick up for the airport the next day but there was none. So we cancelled our stay and removed to the Holiday Inn where everything was clean atractive and altogether much more suitable. Sorry. S. Denholm"

"NO Hot Water, antiquated plumbing - the place appears to be a flop house during the off season..."
