The Good
There was only a small volume of recent reviews online and the majority of them were from guests who liked the hotel.

Most were pleased with the value of the hotel room for a night's rest, finding the rooms to be clean and the beds and pillows comfortable. More than one reviewer called the rooms "adequate".

The staff were sometimes referred to as nice and in particular the housekeeping staff were praised as being helpful by more than one guest.

The location was a strong point for some guests who liked being within walking distance of venues and the heart of downtown Winnipeg.

Free parking was also appreciated and considered a value-added item.

The on-site restaurant was appreciated for its food quality and prices, according to some guests.

Another guest said that at the rate she paid, this hotel offered possibly the best value of all the places she stayed at during her long trip.

There have been some recent upgrades to the hallway carpets and refrigerators added to some rooms (over the past 2 years) according to guests.

There were also returning customers who came yearly and pledged to go back the following summer.

The Bad
Although the hotel managed to please most of its guests, there were also some concerns mentioned in recent guest reviews found online, and used for this analysis. Because there was only a small volume of reviews, there was not a lot of recurring complaints but mostly one-time complaints found.

There were a few guests that were disturbed by the presence of loiterers at the hotel entrance and in the lobby. This gave rise to some travellers opting out of staying at the hotel altogether. However, some returning guests noted that they have not suffered any losses or damage to their vehicles at the hotel.

Other concerns from guests had to do with mostly one-time complaints about various things such as dirty carpet edges, old and worn furniture, the elevator not clean, a rude and unhelpful desk clerk, very little shower pressure, a creaky bed, and the wireless Internet not working as expected.

Wes from Alexander, MB CA rated Carlton Inn Winnipeg 6 out of 10 on January 24, 2011 Verified Guest Hotel Review

"The room was adequate - older but clean, warm and had what was needed for a one night stay. Noise could be a problem as it seemed to carry throughout the halls if someone was talking loudly or children were playing. Generally good value if you want an inexpensive place to stay for a night or two."

"UMM YES I JUST WOULD LIKE TO SAY THAT THE AMOUNT OF DOOR SLAMMING AND PEOPLE DISRESPECTING OTHERS IN THE HOTEL IS SUB PAR, I ALSO FEEL BAD FOR THE FRONT DESK STAFF THAT HAVE TO DEAL WITH THE DRUNKS IN THE HALLWAYS ALL THE TIME, I'M HONESTLY SCARED FOR THERE LIVES. THE HOTEL ITSELF NEEDS SOME WORK, BUT DIFFENATLY HAS POTENTIAL. OTHER THEN ALL OF THAT WHEN I WAS IN MY ROOM IT WAS OK, THE NON SMOKING ROOMS ARE WAY, WAY, WAY, WAY BETTER THEN THE SMOKING ROOMS ARE IN REGURDS TO EVERYTHING. I FEEL EXTREAMLY UNSAFE WHEN ONE LEVEL 1."

"The front entrance was rather grimy and first impressions make you think you made a mistake in booking here. I stayed at this Carlton Inn about 15 years ago and it was great. It's run down now. BUT, having said all this ,my accomodation was okay. BUT, I would never stay here again."

Tom from Vancouver, BC CA rated Carlton Inn Winnipeg 9 out of 10 on May 31, 2005 Verified Guest Hotel Review

"I spent 3 days in Winnipeg and this hotel did the job. Great location, right downtown. The room was clean and the beds were fine. I stayed on the 3rd (top) floor so I didn't hear anything, slept well. For the price you can't go wrong by staying here. The hotel will even cover your taxi fare from the airport to the hotel, gotta like that. Only a few minutes walk from shopping and the Parliament buildings. If you just want a clean place to stay in a good location, this is it. Don't let the rundown looking elevator fool you, the rooms are nice enough."

Bill from Toronto, ON CA rated Carlton Inn Winnipeg 3 out of 10 on April 24, 2005 Verified Guest Hotel Review

"No heat as of April 1st (too soon for Winnipeg). Walls are paper thin at 3am. Staff are defensive at best, sometimes confrontational. I have stayed three times a year for three years (it?s fairly clean and cheap) but have never seen a smile from the staff nor have they ever made eye contact in three years. It is heading towards the flop-house category very quickly. Was hit-on by drunken street panhandlers in the lounge as well. Video gambling terminals bring in the street folk. If you are drunk and need a cheap crash pad this is the hotel for you! Won?t be returning, I?ll have to pay a few extra bucks for a night?s sleep."

"Don't be put off by the reception area - the rooms are fine and the restaurant is surprisingly good. The room rate includes taxi transfer (one way) worth CAN$15."
