Overview
This 51 room, non-smoking hotel is located blocks from the Mayfair Shopping Centre, just north of Hillside on Douglas Street. This "no-frills" property is popular with guests who seek reasonably priced accommodation to use as their "home base" when visiting the city. While this hotel is slightly removed from the downtown Victoria area, it is still accessible by car in under 5 minutes.

Guests have the option of choosing from Standard rooms, or more spacious Suites with kitchenettes. Included in all rooms is free Wi Fi, an iron and an ironing board, air conditioning, cable television and a hair dryer. There is also on-site parking available as well for free. Pets are allowed at this hotel (small dogs only), at a cost $25/day.

There are several dining choices located nearby the hotel, but guests can opt to dine on site for breakfast and lunch. There is a free continential breakfast served from 6:00am-9:00am. Floyd's Diner serves breakfast and lunch and is open daily from 7:00am-3:00pm.

Many of Victoria's popular tourist destinations are located within a relatively short drive from the hotel. A cluster of popular attractions, including the Inner Harbour, BC Whale tours and the BC Maritime Museum are less than a 10 minute drive away. Butchart Gardens is slightly farther away, about a 23 minute drive. Guests travelling by air should budget about 25 minutes to travel the 24.2km between the hotel and Victoria International Airport (YYJ) (distances and driving time estimates: Google Maps).

Check-in is at 3:00pm, while check-out is at 11:00am.

The Good
Guests who had a positive experience at this hotel commented on things like fair value for price paid, location and the breakfast.

The general impression from many guests was that, although this hotel was not "fancy", they were satisfied by having clean, comfortable accommodations at a lower price point. Phrases like "very good deal" and "great for the price" were reflective of guest sentiments.

While this hotel was "slightly out of the way", guests were pleased to be able to access a number of sights, shops and restaurants within about a 5-10 minute drive. Guests with their own vehicles appreciated having a large parking lot at their disposal. For guests looking to use public transportation, staff were very helpful in providing bus information, and stops were conveniently located to the hotel, according to a number of guests.

Generally, staff enhanced the stay of several guests by being friendly, and by responding to requests promptly.

Guests also liked the complimentary continental breakfast. They felt that there was a good selection of items available, and appreciated the size of the breakfast room. One guest also commented on the convenience of having a microwave in the breakfast room, and used it throughout the day to heat up other items.

Guests also used "clean and comfortable" to describe their impressions of the hotel. There were also mentions of things like comfy beds, well-kept grounds around the hotel and well-stocked kitchenettes.

The Bad
Room size was a real issue for a number of guests as well as general maintenance of the hotel's interior.

Many guests indicated that the rooms were small, and at times difficult to manoeuvre. Others commented on narrow doorways and a narrow elevator, and found it a challenge to move their luggage. Guests also felt that the elevator was dirty.

Guest comments indicated that the hotel was worn and showing signs of age in a number of spots, including stained and thin carpets in the rooms and in the common areas. Several guests stated that the common areas were dark and dingy, contributing to an unappealing impression.

Noise was another big issue for some guests. Of the guests that commented on noise, those who had rooms in the front of the hotel said that the traffic produced a significant amount of street noise. Some other guests said that the walls were thin, and were bothered by noise from their neighbours.

Several guests pointed out that the hotel locked its doors at night, and warned that guests returning after an evening out would likely have to wait to be let in.

There were a few other peripheral complaints, pertaining to difficulties with thermostats in rooms, stale and musty odours in the rooms and problems with Wi Fi access.

"It was very awkward having to walk down and up the hill to park the car when both of us had bad knees. The room was clean but I wiped scum off the bathtub before we used it. It was quieter than we had expected and we slept well."

Glenn from Powell River, BC CA rated Super 8 Victoria 8 out of 10 on September 30, 2005 Verified Guest Hotel Review

"The room was rather small for 4 people. There was also a lot of noise in the night from backing vehicles Buses I think. But the customer service was above average by far ,and because of that I would stay again. Sometimes things are not always perfect, but who expects it all the time. thank You. Regards Mrs. Nola (husband/Glenn) MacDonald"

Ellen from Federal Way, WA US rated Super 8 Victoria 4 out of 10 on August 18, 2005 Verified Guest Hotel Review

"Super 8 is out of sync with most hotels that now provide coffee or continental breakfast for the price we were paying. We couldn't get a cup of water anywhere in the hotel. I think that is the minimum a hotel should provide - ice without water is of no use."
