The GoodLocation was a big draw for guests of this hotel, and many appreciated being within walking distance to several attractions. Several guests mentioned the quality of the food at the diner, as well as the cleanliness of the property as positives as well. There were several recommendations from guests to upgrade to Courtyard rooms.
A common theme for guests that were impressed was the convenience of the location, both to points of interest, such as Victoria's Inner Harbour, and to the Trans-Canada Highway as well.
Guests of this hotel seemingly had no pretence about luxury, and mentioned several times that while the property was not fancy, it had a clean appearance and was adequate. Guests used words like "clean and utilitarian" and "unpretentious but comfortable." Several guests mentioned that the property had a certain "nostalgic" and "retro" feel to it.
Several guests recommended upgrading to one of the Courtyard rooms, because they were apparently less noisy than other rooms.
Guests were pleased about few other things. There were several favourable mentions of the home-style food at Paul's Restaurant, while other guests commented on accommodating staff and value for money paid.
The Bad
For guests that had an unpleasant experience, common themes among the complaints included age and worn appearance of the property, inability to sleep and a sense that rooms were hot and stuffy.
Many guests made mention that this older hotel was in need of upgrades, both inside the rooms and outside as well. They mentioned things specifically like worn carpets, linens and décor.
A few guests claimed that they were unable to sleep for a variety of reasons, including uncomfortable beds and an inability to regulate temperature in their rooms. One guest's A/C did not work while another felt the room was exceedingly hot and stuffy, even after airing it out. Another guest mentioned noise from other guests (due to thin walls) kept him from sleeping.
There were a handful of complaints about things like leaky showers and rooms that did not smell fresh (but apparently looked clean).
Confirmed with a front desk agent: WiFi, microwave availability and restaurant (Call date: April 18, 2012).
