Overview
Self-styled as a boutique B&B and set amid groomed gardens, this Victorian mansion featuring carved woodwork, stained glass and crystal chandeliers, overlooks Victoria's Inner Harbour and is directly across from the Coho and Victoria Clipper ferries. This property is popular with guests who enjoy hotels with historical qualities, pretty views and gardens and want to explore Victoria's attractions on foot.

The 9 rooms in this smoke-free and pet-free hotel are all uniquely designed and guests should note that some rooms come with only a bathtub and no in-room shower. In addition, some have views of the harbour and may feature a balcony. Rooms may come with a king or queen bed or two double beds. In all rooms, guests can expect free Wi-Fi, a flat screen TV, a Keurig coffeemaker, a hair dryer and an iron and an ironing board. This accommodation does not offer accessible rooms nor have an elevator.

A small free breakfast with muffins, scones, coffee and juice is available from 7 am to 10 am. Parking is available on site at no extra charge.

Hunters Club restaurant, located at the Huntingdon Hotel & Suites, which shares the same property as the Gatsby Mansion, offers buffet breakfasts and pub-style dinners.

There are several attractions in walking distance of the hotel, including the BC Legislature, a 4-minute walk, BC Whale Tours, around the corner on Wharf St, about a 9 minute walk and the BC Maritime Museum is about 14 minutes away on foot. The restaurants and shops of downtown Victoria are accessed on foot in about 16- 20 minutes. A visit to Butchart Gardens is about a 30-minute drive away. Guests travelling by air should plan for roughly 30 minutes to drive between the hotel and Victoria International Airport (YYJ) ( travel time estimates: Google Maps).

The Good
For guests who had a favourable experience at this hotel, much of it had to do with location, the value and the unique, historic charm the building and grounds provided.

Location was a positive factor for a number of guests, who appreciated being in walking distance of a number of Victoria's main attractions, including the Inner Harbour. One guest said the hotel was well situated for sight-seeing.

Staff were friendly and helpful, according to guests. One guest mentioned how staff went out of their way to help.

A number of guests indicated that they felt that they had received good value for the price paid, given that other similarly situated hotels were more expensive.

There were several additional comments on things like nice antique pieces, on the quality of the food served at the restaurant, the "lovely gardens and ponds" and great views of the harbour.

The Bad
There were a few common points among guest complaints, including lack of detailed cleaning and hotel maintenance.

The hotel did not meet some guests expectations of cleanliness at times. One guest mentioned a dirty carpet in a guestroom and another recent guest reviewer provided a more detailed report and wrote: "wall paper is old and peeling off the walls, the carpets are dirty, the sofa is ripped and frayed, it's dusty and looks uncared for".

This hotel was showing its age, according to a number of guests, who suggested that the furniture and the decor needed to be updated, and that more could be done to give the hotel a well-maintained appearance. One guest suggested fresh paint and another just said the hotel could use some refurbishing. One guest said the water took forever to heat up for a bath and his bathroom door did not close fully.

Guests sometimes were displeased that staff offered no help with the luggage when they had to climb several flights of stairs to their rooms due to a lack of an elevator.

Some guests did not like the bathrooms without showers.
