Overview
Built in 1876, the Dalton Hotel & Suites is Victoria's oldest hotel. Described by several guests as "vintage", this 70 room, non-smoking property still maintains much of its original architecture. Located on Yates St., the hotel is approximately a 7 minute walk from the downtown Victoria area.

Guests can choose from Standard rooms, more spacious Boutique rooms or Suites (some of which have a fireplace and/or a balcony). Included with all rooms is free WI FI, an 18-inch television and a coffeemaker. Parking is available on site, for a cost of $10/day. Guests should note that pets are not permitted at this hotel.

While the hotel is located nearby a number of restaurants, guests can choose to dine on site at the Office Restaurant and Lounge, serving lunch daily from 11:00am-5:00pm and dinner from 5:00pm-10:00pm. Guests receive a voucher for 15% off at the restaurant, to be used during their stay. In addition, a complimentary deluxe continental breakfast is included.

The hotel is situated within walking distance to a number of popular Victoria tourist attractions. The Inner Harbour and BC Whale Tours are less than a 10 minute walk away on Wharf St. The BC Maritime Musuem is also less than 10 minutes away in Bastion Square. Butchart Gardens is slightly farther away, about a 13 minute drive. Guests travelling by air should budget about 27 minutes to travel the 25.8km to Victoria International Airport (YYJ) (distances and driving times estimates: Google Maps).

Check-in is at 3:00pm, while check-out is at 11:00am.

Confirmed with a front desk agent: WI FI, continental breakfast, parking and restaurant voucher (call date: May 29, 2012).
The Good
There were several things mentioned by guests that enhanced their stay, including attentive service from staff, convenient location and positive perception of value for the price paid.

Staff received top marks from a number of guests for the excellent service they delivered. Words like "friendly", "helpful" and "courteous" were used to by guests to describe their impressions. One guest felt that the staff were  particularly skilled in delivering "family-friendly service".

The property itself received many favourable comments. Many guests appreciated the historic charm of the hotel, and said that it contributed to making the experience "unique". Rooms were "comfortable", according to guests, and both the rooms and common areas were clean.

Given that the hotel was situated in a desirable, convenient location within walking distance of a number of shops, restaurants and downtown attractions, guests felt that there was good value for the price paid.

Several guests also enjoyed the continental breakfast, commenting favourably both on the quality and the selection of food.

There were some other peripheral comments on things like having windows that opened, comfy beds, quality bedding and towels.

The Bad
While most reviews were positive for this hotel, there was a common thread through some of the guest complaints, including issues with the maintenance of the property and with the rooms themselves.

While many guests appreciated both the history and the "vintage feel" of the hotel, some felt that the decor was dated and fading and in need of attention. They mentioned things like peeling paint and plaster being evident on the walls.

A few guests felt that the rooms were small. Some guests had issues with their heating units and with hot water. Some guests found it inconvenient that there was no air conditioning, and that there were some common in-room amenities not included at this hotel, like hair dryers.

Some guests felt that the walls were thin, which many attributed to the hotel's age, and were bothered both by street noise and by noise from other guests.

While many guests did appreciate having access to on-site parking, several guests said that spaces were limited, and that the lot itself was very small. In addition, some guests were not happy that they had to pay for parking.

There were some other peripheral complaints that mentioned things like spotty WI FI connection and "stale" odours in the rooms.
Confirmed with a front desk agent: WI FI, continental breakfast, parking and restaurant voucher (call date: May 29, 2012).

"very warm welcome and quite useful information about dining suggestions. Good waffles for breakfast; walking distance to most attractions, corridors needed some fresh air! no view"

Sharon l from Delta, BC CA rated Dalton Hotel & Suites 9 out of 10 on June 20, 2010 Verified Guest Hotel Review

"Comfort, hospitality and value in the heart of down town."
"The only complaint my fiance had about the room was that the tv in the boutique room was too old for the cable, to hook his lap-top to. It really wasn't a big deal to me, but I know that newer, flat screen tv's, with all the attachments are important to some people."

"Pretty stinky, especially halls and elevator. Beds were nice but the hotel needs a lot of work. Price was high for what you got."

Betty from Papakura, NZ rated Dalton Hotel & Suites 7 out of 10 on July 01, 2006 Verified Guest Hotel Review

"Room looking over airshaft was very dark and depressing. It was too hot and window screens were dirty so no air came in. Room was very smelly as if it had been closed up for years. Location was very good but I would warn othere of smell and lack of air."

"Quaint, but not worth what we paid. No hot water one morning, and we were not told in advance that we'd have to pay for parking. It is understandable that it is an extra cost, but no warning in advance made me quite grumpy at checkout time. The cafe in the lobby is awesome though. Not a bad place, just thought it was overpriced."
