"When we booked this room with Canadianhotelguide.com we requested a kingsize, smoking room. When we arrived at the ParkPlaze after an exhausing eight hour drive in the rain, we were told the entire hotel is nonsmoking and our room had two double beds instead of a kingsize. Although the room had obviously been recently renovated the paint on the ceiling in the bathroom was peeling +++. On the plus side there was a pub attached to the hotel(with a cold beer and wine store). The pub could use a little TLC but had a good selection of draught beverages which we enjoyed whilst watching the hockey game.
It was very handy to be able to get a resonably priced hotel less than one block from my wifes surgeon, and the general hospital. The reason we were there was for her post-op check up."

"While I made my reservation on line, I called the front desk to ensure I would get a non smoking room. I was not told that there was major construction going on at the time of my stay. My confirmation stated I would have a deluxe room with a view. The view of beautiful Vancouver was completely oblitered due to the whole front of the building being covered in white plastic. I was concerned about the noise from the construction and was given a room at the back of the hotel that looked out at the Vancouver General Hospital and a dirty alley and parking lot. The room was a smoking room and I could smell cigarette smoke from the adjoining room.
The only reason I chose this hotel was for it's proximity to the hospital.
The bathrooms are situated so that the noise from the shower in the next room was loud enough to wake me at 5:30 AM."

"I have stayed at this hotel before with better than average results. This time was a disaster. Although I booked my reservation on line, I spoke with two different desk clerks prior to my arrival to confirm my needs would be met.
At no time did either of them mention that the hotel was currently being renovated. This was a HUGE inconvenience as I was there for medical reasons with an elderly mother. No matter where I parked my mother would be required to walk either up or down a very steep hill or ramp. The usual lobby parking was blocked off and there wasn't a decent loading area in front of or behind the hotel.
When I asked the desk clerk if she could give us a room reduction she said she wasn't allowed and that I would have to wait until the manager arrived that day. I wasn't able to wait. I'm surprised that there was no one on site who could authorize such a transaction.
On a positive note the housekeeping staff are incredible. My room was clean and tidy. The housekeeping staff were always pleasant, polite and cheerful. 5 star housekeeping!"

"if you're getting the 'free breakfast' i'd call them beforehand to ask if it's "CONTINENTAL" or "CANADIAN" - each morning it seemed to vary depending on who was working the front desk/handing out the b'fast coupons.
the hotel itself was absolutely perfect for our needs for 3 nights in vancouver for the vancouver folk music festival - it's a GREAT location since it's NOT in the downtown/business district area - quite close to granville island, and there's copious amounts of shopping/food (huge 24 hour drugstore across the street even) within easy walking distance.
the room was clean, the bathroom had some INCREDIBLE water pressure, and the beds were comfortable. overall a wonderful experience."
