Overview
Located about a 14 minute drive to Calgary International Airport (YYC), this hotel is popular with guests who want to be close to the airport. Judging by the comments, a number of guests were staying here because they were catching early morning flights. On-site amenities include an indoor heated pool, a hot tub and a gym.

Guests have their choice between Standard rooms or larger Suites, some of which have kitchenettes. All rooms have Wi-Fi, a hair dryer, a coffeemaker, voicemail and an iron and an ironing board. Complimentary parking is available on site, and pets are welcome for a cost of $10/day. To use the airport shuttle, a $5 charge applies for the trip to the airport. There is no charge for the return trip.

Moxie's Restaurant is on site at this hotel, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner (open Sunday-Thursday 6:00am-12:00am, Friday-Saturday 6:00am-1:00am).

While the airport is located nearby, many attractions require a longer drive. The downtown area, which is home to the Calgary Tower, the Glenbow Museum and the Stampede Corral, is just over a 20 minute drive away. The Calgary Zoo is about an 18 minute drive away (distances and driving time estimates: Google Maps).

The Good
There were a few common elements that enhanced the stay of many guests, including convenient location and a perception of good value for price paid.

Based on a number of guest comments, there was a sense that many guests felt as though they got good value for the room rate. Words like "cheap" (in reference to the price), and "value for money" were reflective of guest sentiment.

Guests also liked the location of this hotel, particularly its proximity to the airport. Phrases like "great place for airport departure" and "location perfect for airport" described how many of the guests felt.

Guests received good service from staff here. One guest said that staff was very helpful in providing advice for "travel and sightseeing plans". Words like "friendly", "helpful" and "courteous" were common.

There were a number of comments from guests who were pleased that a popular chain restaurant, Moxie's, was located on site.

While many of the reviews used for this analysis were favourable, guest complaints had threads in common, including worn decor, and having to pay a fee for the shuttle.

Some guests noted that the decor at this hotel was ageing, and suggested that updates were in order. There were negative comments regarding "old decor" and "older rooms".

A few guests objected to being charged for the airport shuttle, and felt that it was an unnecessary charge, saying that other similarly located hotels offered the shuttle for free.

There were some additional complaints, centring on things like spotty Wi-Fi connections and odours of smoke in the rooms.

"Lacking in customer service and reasonable amenities."

"Check in at 5:15 pm was very slow. Not advised of Moxie room service AND there was not information in the room (I specifically checked). When I returned from Moxies with my take-out order, my keys did not work. The check-out sheet tucked into the room door way was only partially in the room. This is a security issue as anyone walking by could have determined that I was likely alone in the room and they also had access to my home address. When I raised these concerns with the front desk at check out, the female (who was not actually checking me out) starting arguing with me that there was Moxie's information in my room). I did not appreciate starting my work day with a debate or disagreement with the front clerk."

"Accommodations and staff were excellent. We had an overnight stay in Calgary while flying home to Ontario from Maui. Very tired and the staff were extremely accommodating. I actually booked online from Maui. The only concern I had was with the shuttle service. I understand the Sandman hotel has an agreement with WestJet. If you are waiting in line for the shuttle and WestJet employees have already called in, they get preferencial service. Which I agree, they deserve, however, with only one van to accommodate all travelers, it can be a long wait. Especially on long flights. Having said all that, the cab fare to your hotel is very reasonable (we took a cab instead of waiting) The complimentary gift card for breakfast offered by Moxies was a great way to complete a good night's rest at Sandman. "We booked a long time before this stay and a week before staying we stated again (for the second time) that we wanted a smoking room. We were assured that it was no problem as we gave very good notice. Hence to say, when we showed up at 12:30 a.m.(a late flight), we were told that all they had was non smoking and that it was too bad. I DON'T like being put on the spot, just because it was late at night and I had no time to find another hotel. I'm NOT impressed!!!!"

"We had just come off a very lovely vacation in Banff and Jasper and had been driving all day. We were ready for an quiet evening meal and bedtime in prep for an early get-up to fly back to Austin. While Moxie's had good food, the atmosphere was definitely for the under 35 crowd-- too loud and jazzy for us. The first clue was the go-go boots, tight black minis and tight T's of the hostesses. When we checked in there was not enough staff . One woman was fielding calls and trying to check us in at the same time. Needless to say the phone call took precidence"
