Overview
Located in Calgary's North East quadrant, sandwiched between Hwy 1 and Deerfoot Trail (Hwy 2), approximately a 14 minute drive (13.5km) from Calgary International Airport (YYC), this hotel is popular with guests that have access to a car, and who don't mind driving to access shops, attractions and restaurants. On-site amenities include a gym, a heated indoor pool and a whirlpool.

There are a number of room options available of differing sizes, bed types and configurations, depending on need and budget. In all rooms, guests can expect Wi-Fi, a 32 inch flat screen TV, a coffeemaker, a hairdryer and an iron and an ironing board. Pets are not allowed at this hotel.

For guests travelling by air, there is a 24-hour shuttle between the airport and the hotel (which a number of guests found useful, given the distance between the hotel and the airport). The hotel charges a fee of $5/person on behalf of the airport for the shuttle service. There is also free parking on site.

Guests are offered a complimentary continental breakfast daily. The hotel's official website says there is an on-site restaurant, however it has since been closed (confirmed in August 2012).

Guests staying at this hotel will most definitely need a car to get around. The Calgary Zoo is the closest major attraction, and is about a 13 minute drive away. Guests in town for the Stampede should plan for about a 14 minute drive to reach the Stampede Corral. For business travellers needing access to Calgary's downtown area and business district, this hotel is about a 16 minute drive (6.7km) away (distances and driving time estimates: Google Maps).

Confirmed with a front desk agent: airport shuttle, breakfast, restaurant and parking (call date: August 7, 2012).

The Good
Guests liked a number of things about this hotel, particular its convenient location and service received from staff.

The location was convenient and easy to find for a number of guests, who liked the proximity to major arteries like Deerfoot Trail (Hwy 2) and Hwy 1. Guests did qualify this comment, by saying that this location was convenient only for guests that had a vehicle.

Guests received good service from staff at this hotel, and described them as being friendly and helpful. Front desk staff were mentioned specifically.

Several guests commented on the level of cleanliness at the hotel, and had the impression that it was clean and comfortable.

There were a few peripheral comments on things like comfy beds and the quality and selection available at the free continental breakfast.

The Bad
Although a number of comments used for this analysis were favourable, there were some common points among guest complaints, in particular the proximity to the airport and the state of hotel decor.

While this Best Western was touted as being an airport hotel, a number of guests felt that it was a considerable distance from Calgary International Airport itself (14 minute drive, approximately 13.5km) and the airport hotel moniker was misleading. These reviewers suggested that future guests seeking easy access to the airport should choose from a selection of hotels closer to YYC.

Guests commented frequently on the worn decor at this hotel. One guest said that the hotel needed a "facelift". Phrases like "small, dated rooms", "worn" and "dingy" were reflective of guest sentiment.

Some guests felt that the walls were thin, and were bothered by noise from guests in neighbouring rooms.

There were some additional comments on things like difficulties in regulating water temperature in the showers and limited parking availability.

"Our contract with you was for $109 Canadian. When my people were in the hotel, they were charged $169. My group leader protested and ended up paying $149 which is still $40/room more than booked on your web-site and which for the number of nights, means we got ripped off. This hotel did NOT honour the rate you sold us the rooms for and we have been totally taken advantage of by the hotel. We are going to take this to a higher level in the Westmont Chain of hotels and Travelodge because they were far from accommodating and the hotel needs a lot of work.
