Overview
Located near the edge of Banff about a 15-minute walk from downtown, the Fox Hotel & Suites is decorated in a mountain-lodge theme and features a hot pool which replicates the Cave & Basin hot springs. It is popular with guests looking for the feel of a resort hotel and the friendliness of a smaller hotel.

The 100% smoke-free and pet-free hotel has 116 rooms and suites. Basic hotel rooms are not air conditioned and offer one queen or two double beds, plus a single sofabed. All rooms come with a flat-screen TV, a coffeemaker, a hair dryer, luxury linens with down duvets and feather mattress toppers and luxury handmade bathroom toiletries.

One-bedroom and two-bedroom suites come with private bedrooms with one king, one queen or two double beds, each with an ensuite bathroom. All suites have an air-conditioned living room, which comes with a double sofabed, and a kitchen nook with a mini-fridge, a microwave, a toaster, a sink, and a dining area. Some two-bedroom suites have balconies facing onto Banff Avenue.

Premium Loft Suites and Premium 1-Bedroom Loft Suites come with a fireplace and balcony. All rooms and suites have a private entrance from the outdoor courtyard and each courtyard level has an outside deck which can be accessed by the hotel's indoor elevator.

The Fox Hotel provides free amenities and cost-saving options: Wi-Fi in all spaces, a continental breakfast with waffle station, heated underground parking, Roam Bus passes for downtown and nearby attractions, and The Best of Banff Discount Booklet, which offers discounts on restaurants and other service providers.

The hotel features an indoor cave-style hot pool, with waterfalls, that is open to the sky. It is a replica of the Cave and Basin's hot springs. A dry sauna and exercise room are attached.

On-site dining is available for breakfast, lunch and dinner at Chili's Grill and Bar.

The hotel is about a 15-minute walk to the restaurants, pubs and shops of Banff's town centre. Banff Upper Hot Springs is about 9 minutes away by car and the Banff Springs Golf Course is about a 6-minute drive from the hotel. Ski shuttles to the area's major ski resorts can be caught in front of Banff Caribou Lodge, about a 2-minute walk from the hotel (confirmed with 2012-2013 schedule). (All travel time estimates: Google Maps)

Confirmed with a front desk agent on September 27, 2012: the hotel is smoke and pet-free, all balconies face onto Banff Avenue, all rooms open to the outdoor courtyard and each courtyard deck or level can be accessed via the hotel's indoor elevator.

The Good
The Fox Hotel and Suites was very well liked by many guests who recently reviewed their stay. Guests complimented the hotel's staff, atmosphere, decor, hot pool, and free amenities.

By far, the staff received the most praise from guests in recent online reviews used for this summary. They were commended for their warm and welcoming smiles at check-in, their willingness to go out of their way to help guests out, and their immediate responses to addressing any problem.

The hotel's location was next on the list of merit, mostly for being close enough to downtown to walk, but far enough away to have quiet evenings.

The hotel's Cave and Basin Hotpool — nicknamed The Grotto — was also highly appreciated by the hotel guests who called it exceptional as well as clean. Guests said it provided them with a relaxing and fun experience and was one of the best parts of the hotel.

Many guests commented on the beds and although a couple of reviewers said they were hard, the great majority thought they were very comfortable.

Guests praised the hotel for providing free amenities. Some were happy about receiving free Roam Bus passes and free parking at the hotel for their cars. This enabled them to leave their cars behind, and freed them from having to locate and pay for parking downtown. Others were pleased to receive the discount booklet, free Wi-Fi and included breakfast.

Guests said the hotel was immaculately kept and thoughtfully decorated and furnished. The suites were especially enjoyed for their spaciousness, 2-level design, and luxury toiletries. Some mentioned that they were pleased to have real china in the kitchenettes, plus good-sized balconies.

A couple of guests mentioned that Wi-Fi worked well and was very fast.

Many guest reviewers said they would return to the Fox Hotel and recommended it to others. One guest remarked, "The Fox has everything I look for in a hotel, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting Banff."

The Bad
There were a few disgruntled guests who provided some critique of the hotel and shone a light on its weak spots in the recent online guest reviews sourced for this overview.

Although the hotel's suites were very spacious and air conditioned, their basic rooms were considered small (250 sq. ft.) and were not air conditioned. Some guests complained that their rooms were smaller than expected and cramped when there were two double beds in the room. In addition, a few guests thought that their bathrooms were small.

The lack of air conditioning in some of the rooms, but not all, was disconcerting to some who felt that one had to pay for the most expensive rooms in order to obtain air conditioning.

Another area of concern came from noise disturbances created by other guests of the hotel who were returning to their rooms very late at night. Sounds were carried into the rooms from the outside decks and courtyard.

A few guests complained about the lack of mini-fridges and microwaves in the basic hotel rooms. As well, a couple of guests thought the lighting was inadequate in their rooms.

Although more reviewers were very happy with the hotel and thought it provided good value, a few were displeased with the lack of amenities in their rooms and thought that the hotel was overpriced for what it provided.

"Fairly expensive and full service hotel so I would have appreciated a terry robe (asked but none available - perhaps stock needs to be increased?). Also would expect that glasses/mugs should be dried and put away."
