Tips For Staying Near Waterloo Airport

Location
Waterloo Airport, or The Region of Waterloo International Airport (YKF), is located in the town of Breslau. The name of the airport can be a bit misleading, as it is technically closer to the towns of Kitchener and Cambridge than Waterloo.

Waterloo is located 17 km, or a 20-minute drive, from the airport. Downtown Kitchener is 12 km, or an approximate 17-minute drive, from the airport by the quickest route, and downtown Cambridge is 14 km, or a 20-minute drive from the airport.

The hotels closest to the airport are located in Kitchener and Cambridge, and are all located within a 10- to 15-minute drive from the airport. Because the hotels closest to the airport are all within the same general region, they are also all about a 20-minute bus ride or 10-minute drive from downtown Kitchener.

Parking
The airport has three parking lots for long-term parking and a small area designated for short-term parking with a limit of 1 hour.

Rates for the short-term lot are $1 per 15 minutes and $1 for every additional 15 minutes until the 1-hour limit, to a maximum rate of $4 for 1 hour.

For the long-term lots, rates are $3 per hour, $6 per day or $42 per week. Parking passes are to be paid in advance at one of the six self-serve kiosks and must be displayed face-up on the dashboard. Accessible parking is located in Parking Lot 1 in front of the airport terminal.

Getting Around: Public Transit
There is public transit in the Waterloo region, run by Grand River Transit. However, the buses do not run directly to the airport, and the closest stops will be about a 10-minute taxi ride away. Routes will vary depending on which hotel you are staying at, however, there are general directions for taking public transit into Kitchener or Cambridge.

To take the bus into Kitchener, you must first take a taxi to the nearest stop at Lackner Blvd. and Corfield Dr. The bus ride takes approximately 50 minutes and a one-way fare will cost $3.00.

To take the bus into Cambridge, you must first take a taxi to the nearest stop at Boxwood Dr. and Vondrau Dr. The total travel time is around 1 hour and a one-way fare costs $3.00.

Because the closest bus stops are a taxi ride away from the airport, despite public transit being cheaper, it may be quicker and more straightforward for guests without access to a vehicle to take a taxi all the way to their hotel.

The airport has one restaurant called Aviator Cafe that serves both sit-down meals as well as airline-approved snacks and small meals to bring onto your flight. It should be noted that this restaurant is located in the airport departure lounge and serves those boarding departing flights. A valid boarding pass is required for entry.

For passengers both arriving and departing, there are two vending machines, located in the main lobby and the departure lounge, that offer snacks and hot and cold beverages.
