Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ) offers those visiting Toronto the ultimate convenience in travel because, unlike Toronto Pearson International Airport, it's virtually located downtown, close to all amenities including the city's Financial District, Entertainment District and even the Discovery District.

Those visiting Toronto on business, pleasure, or to access some of Toronto's many health services can save time and energy by flying into this airport and staying in a nearby hotel. My picks are hotels that might interest the traveller based upon overall value, convenience to shopping, restaurants, transit options and the many attractions, facilities and services of the city of Toronto.

  • Several lodgers enjoyed their clean and comfortable rooms
  • Some guests enjoyed delicious meals and breakfast buffets on site
  • Many guests enjoyed the elegant interiors and public spaces of the hotel
  • Wi-Fi is 15.76 per 24 hours for non Club members

This historic, chateau-style hotel which originally opened its doors in 1929, is still an inviting and exceptional hotel with well-trained staff, grand public spaces, excellent dining and recently renovated rooms.

It's my pick for the ultimate in convenience for downtown Toronto. It's located right across the street from Toronto's Union Station, the main transportation hub of downtown Toronto, giving guests easy access to Via Rail, GO Train, and Toronto's convenient subway system (TTC).

The Royal York also offers easy access to Toronto's underground PATH network (the largest of its kind with 19 miles of retail space) connecting to Union Station via an underground corridor (great for inclement weather) and a plethora of shopping, services, restaurants and entertainment. Eaton Centre, downtown's main shopping mall, can be reached underground from The Fairmont via the PATH.

It's also situated at the heart of Toronto's Financial Core and Central Business District, offering access to the many offices and banks along Bay Street, King Street and the surrounding district.

Plus, if you're flying Porter Airlines, you'll be able to catch Porter's shuttle bus directly across the street. Even if you're not flying Porter, there is a complimentary shuttle bus operated by the Toronto Port Authority which is available to anyone going to Billy Bishop / Toronto City Centre airport and (you guessed it), it also picks up and drops off essentially in front of the Royal York Hotel.

Tips For Staying Near Toronto Island Airport

The Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ) is located on Toronto Island and separated from downtown Toronto by a narrow channel of water. To access the airport, you need to take a short (121-metre) ferry ride (one of the shortest ferry rides in the world). The crossing only takes 90 seconds, but the ferry only runs once every 15 minutes. So, be sure to factor the ferry's schedule into your timing. Fares are free for pedestrians and $11 return for vehicles.
There are three parking options for those looking to park their vehicle near the airport. One parking lot is on the island itself (you take your vehicle over via the ferry for a fee of $11), and two are on the downtown Toronto mainland, near the ferry terminal. All three options offer both short-term and long-term parking, though rates vary by parking lot and length of stay. For shorter-term (30 minutes to up to 4 days), the cheapest option is the lot at Stadium Rd (200 feet west of the ferry terminal at the waterfront). For long-term parking of 5 days or more, the cheapest (and more secure) parking would be the island parking lot.
Getting Around: Free Shuttle
There is a free shuttle between Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (terminal building on the mainland) and Toronto's Union Station every 15 minutes. The shuttle is available to anyone wishing to go to and from the airport, whether or not they are travelling via the airport. For the benefit of its passengers, Porter Airlines also operates a free shuttle to and from Union Station every 15 minutes.

This could come in handy as most of the below-mentioned hotels do not offer a shuttle service to the airport or ferry docks.
Getting Around: Public Transit
All of the hotels listed below are served by the Toronto Transit Commision (TTC) public transit service. Streetcars operate regularly throughout the downtown core, and the 511 streetcar along Bathurst Street is a 6-minute walk from the ferry docks. Travel times for all of the hotels below should not exceed 30 minutes, except during rush hours, when the streets of downtown Toronto are regularly jammed with traffic.

Fares are $3 for a single one-way ride, and day passes can be purchased for $11.00. More route and schedule information can be found on their website.
You will find a self-serve kitchen with free snacks and drinks to sustain you while you wait for your flight. A shop selling sandwiches and other snacks, as well as drinks like beer and wine, is also available in the departures lounge.
Other Tips
Porter Airlines, the primary airline flying out of the Island Airport, really works to make sure that the wait for your flight is as comfortable as possible. A business centre filled with computers makes it easy for the business person on the run to get in some last minute e-mails before their flight.
