Travellers flying in to Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) expecting to be downtown Toronto will be in for a bit of a surprise. The Toronto Airport is actually located in Mississauga, a 30 to 45-minute drive from downtown Toronto.

For travellers flying out of Pearson, finding a hotel that provides a free shuttle and extended parking privileges while you're away might be a good consideration since parking at Pearson can be pricey and the series of highway ramps that filter into the airport can be confusing for unfamiliar drivers.

My picks are based upon value for the dollar when considering room prices, guests ratings, amenities offered, and convenience to the airport.

The highly-rated Best Western Plus Travel Hotel Toronto Airport is my pick for best value for a Toronto airport hotel. It’s on Eglinton, about an 8-minute drive to the Pearson Airport Terminal, and adjacent to the Centennial Park Golf Course which some rooms overlook adding a peaceful ambiance.

Room rates were the lowest of my 3 top choices when compared over a 3-month period, under $100 for all days compared, and Wi-Fi and parking are also included.

It has a free and convenient airport shuttle service that runs 24 hours, making this hotel suitable for guests coming in by plane and without a vehicle. It also offers reasonable extended parking terms for car travellers who wish to leave their vehicle at the hotel and fly out ($50 per week).

Besides a free hot breakfast which was highly praised by guest reviews for having “real” scrambled eggs, bacon, waffles, fresh fruit, pastries and cereal offered daily, it’s the only hotel of my picks with a restaurant on site. Michele’s Italian Ristorante & Bar serves authentic Italian dishes for lunch and dinner and provides a cocktail lounge for relaxing in the evening.

Rooms are also better equipped with microwaves in all rooms as well as mini-fridges, 42” cable/satellite TVs, dataports and work desks. Beds are comfortable, according to guests, and have the appealing new triple sheeting. The fitness centre is available 24 hours and there’s a hot tub on site which is open from 6 am to 11 pm daily.

Being well situated, guests can find other dining options within a 4- to 8-minute walk and Square One Shopping Centre (one of Canada’s largest with 360 stores) is about a 12-minute drive from this hotel.

Cons

  • A few guests complained about the crowded state of the breakfast area, with not enough seating and that it closed too promptly at 10 am
The very highly-rated Hampton Inn by Hilton Toronto Airport Corporate Centre is my second choice for truly excellent value. It’s located two doors over from the Best Western with a higher price tag (some days just over $100 and some about $140). Parking and Wi-Fi are also included in the room rate.

It’s about 8 minutes to the airport via a 24-hour free shuttle. The hotel offers park & fly rates, but only if booked directly through the hotel and the rate differs depending on the dates. Guests can also take advantage of the free area shuttle service offered to guests within a 5-mile radius.

There’s also a wonderful and well-liked free hot breakfast (with cold selections) offered along with a “to go bag” if you’re on the run. There’s no on-site restaurant, but guests will be able to walk over to Michele’s at the Best Western or find a few other choices within 6 minutes on foot.

All rooms are nicely appointed with modern bedding, work areas, lap desks, safe deposit boxes, mini-fridges and 37” TVs with HD channels. On site, there’s a 24-hour convenience store, a fitness centre, a mini-putting green and an indoor pool. In summertime guests can also enjoy a picnic in the outdoor gazebo.

The highly-rated Stay Inn Airport South is my third choice offering very good value for Toronto airport hotels. It’s very conveniently located on Evans with great access to a quick and direct route to Toronto’s Pearson airport utilizing Hwy 427, about 8 minutes. It’s also just off the Gardiner expressway, giving it quick access to downtown Toronto (15 to 20 minutes).

Ratings are high and prices are low ($105 on all days checked), which is a great combination with many pleased former guests. It’s best suited to those with cars or rental cars as it doesn’t offer a free airport shuttle and cab fare to the airport can run from $40 to $60, depending on the provider. Extended parking is $50 per week and daily parking is free along with Wi-Fi.

There’s a well-liked, free hot breakfast buffet offered similar to the above hotels and guests liked the rooms with 42” flat screen TVs, free movie channels, work desks with ergonomic chairs and in-room mini-fridges.The hotel offers free 24-hour coffee in the lobby and a business centre.

Besides weekday dinners, guests are treated to a well-liked free breakfast buffet and free parking as well as a free area and airport shuttle.

All guest rooms are suites with separate living areas and full-size kitchenettes. Guests are offered free grocery shopping and there is a convenience store on site for lighter meals and snacks. Don’t want to cook? No problem, Michele’s Ristorante is only a 2-minute walk away.

Tips For Staying Near Toronto Airport

Location
The area directly around the airport is not really walkable and is mostly a mix of commercial and industrial. Staying very close to the airport is convenient for those getting on a flight, but don't expect to be near any considerable nightlife and entertainment.

Some mistake the location of the airport to be near downtown Toronto, but in fact, the airport is actually in Mississauga and can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour to drive depending on traffic.
Getting Around: Driving
Driving in to the airport can be somewhat confusing for a first-time visitor as there is a network of ramps that lead off the highway into the terminals, which can feel like a bit of a maze.
Parking
Parking at the airport can be somewhat expensive at $3.00 every 20 minutes and daily maximums of $18 to $28 depending on which lot you find yourself in.

Slightly cheaper off-site parking is available at the Value Park Lot for $15 per day, located at 6135 Airport Road in Mississauga. The LINK train will pick passengers up from this lot and take them to Terminal 1 and Terminal 3, usually less than a 10 minute wait.

Shopping
If you are looking to shop but don't have the time to make it downtown Toronto, Square One Shopping Centre (1.6 million square feet, over 350 shops) is about 15 km south of the airport (anywhere from a 10 to 25-minute drive depending on where your hotel is located or which end of the airport you're leaving from).

Sherway Gardens is also relatively close to the airport, roughly the same distance as Square One (about 15 km), southeast of Pearson.
