Tips For Staying In Nepean

Nepean, Ottawa
Nepean is a large suburb, west of downtown Ottawa, along Highway 417. This area is mostly residential and features parks, shopping centres and recreational complexes.

Finding a Nepean Hotel
Hotels in Nepean are a bit scattered throughout the area. Hockey fans may want to consider the hotels farthest to the west, which are closest to the Canadian Tire Centre (home of the NHL’s Ottawa Senators).

Many of the hotels in the east end of Nepean are within a 10-minute drive of the Nepean Sportsplex and the Ottawa International Airport (YOW), and cater especially to air travellers. Our Editor's Picks for best value in Nepean near the airport is Monterey Inn Resort and Conference Centre, which offers great rates, a free breakfast and a free airport shuttle service, plus river views and a heated outdoor pool.

Several popular hotel chains are found in Nepean, along with a couple independently-owned properties. Most hotels offer free parking and free Wi-Fi, while some of the chain hotels also offer a free breakfast. Hotels in Nepean are generally more affordable than hotels in downtown Ottawa and are less susceptible to price hikes during downtown festivals.

What to Do in Nepean
The Bayshore Shopping Centre in northwest Nepean features 165 stores and several restaurants. This mall also has a bus terminal for accessing downtown Ottawa.

For more active travellers, the Nepean Sportsplex offers a swimming pool, fitness centre, ice rink and spinning classes. The Centrepointe Theatre, located near Algonquin College, is a performing arts venue that features comedy acts, musicians and family-friendly variety shows.

Getting Around Nepean and Surrounding Areas
Nepean is a large area that is probably best explored by car. However, a few of the east-end hotels near Carling Avenue are within walking distance of the Westgate shopping centre.

With heavy traffic and limited downtown parking, public transit is usually the best mode of transportation in central Ottawa. There are also dedicated bus lanes and tunnels on select routes.

If you’re looking to travel beyond the Nepean area, park your car at the Bus Terminal at Bayshore Shopping Centre and take Route 2 downtown (which departs every 30 minutes). Full maps and schedules can be found on the OC Transpo website, including schedules for special events and hockey games at the Canadian Tire Centre. Single-ride tickets are $3.45, while day passes cost $8.10.

If you choose to brave the trip by car, the drive into downtown Ottawa from Nepean should take 20 minutes or so, depending on where in Nepean you are staying and on traffic.

Despite the windy and frigid winters, exploring Nepean and surrounding areas is fun any time of year. If you are hoping to catch an Ottawa Senator's hockey game during your trip to Nepean, be sure to plan well in advance. Seats at the Canadian Tire Centre get snatched up quickly!
