St John’s downtown has a great selection of highly-rated hotels. As far as rates compare, they seem a little pricey to me on the east coast, so a cheap hotel is similar in price to an expensive hotel in many other cities across Canada. But of course you can’t beat east coast friendliness and hospitality which these hotels are also known for! My picks are the most budget-friendly and highly rated.

Tips For Staying In Downtown St. John's

Located along the St. John’s Harbour waterfront, downtown St. John’s may be small, but it’s big on hospitality! Travellers will find boutique shops, dining, nightlife and attractions all within the downtown core.

Affordable Downtown Accommodations
There are several chain hotels and Bed and Breakfast properties in downtown St. John’s. The chain hotels tend to be about $100 more per night than the B&B accommodations, however.

Gower Street Bed and Breakfast is our Editor's Pick for best value in the downtown area. This B&B includes free Wi-Fi, free parking and a highly-rated free breakfast. Our editor recommends booking well in advance.

If B&Bs aren't your thing, Quality Hotel Harbourview is a great alternative, and our editor's second choice for value in downtown St. John's. It has free Wi-Fi and free parking, and is just off Water Street, about 1 block from the water. Many (but not all) rooms overlook the harbour.

St. John’s is a hilly city, and most hotels offer pleasant views of the harbour from guest rooms. While many hotels, including our Editor's Picks, offer free parking and free Wi-Fi, some higher-end chains charge $10 to $15 extra for parking.

If you're not sure when to book, you'll want to note that room rates peak in the summertime, starting in June for iceberg-viewing season. Prices also rise during the annual George Street Festival and Royal Regatta in late July and early August.

St. John’s is a Walking City
Soak up the charm of this town by walking along the streets; the multi-coloured houses and boutique gift shops are an attraction all their own. Most points of interest are within a 20-minute walk of downtown hotels. However, if you’re feeling particularly active, I suggest hiking through the steep trails on Signal Hill overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. (And don't forget your camera -- trust me!)

If you arrived via the airport, and plan to explore primarily on foot, you can take a cab to your hotel more cheaply than you can rent a vehicle. Taxi rates are a flat $25 from the St. John’s International Airport (YYT) to downtown hotels and B&Bs.

Mingle with the Locals on George Street
Well known for its nightlife, George Street is a popular destination for locals and tourists. About 25 bars and pubs pack this short, pedestrian-only, 170-metre street. First-time tourists should be sure to drop by Trapper John’s on the north end of George Street to participate in a “Screech-In” ceremony and become an honorary Newfoundlander. The George Street festival in late July features live outdoor concerts on the street.

Other Downtown Attractions
As mentioned above, Signal Hill in downtown St. John’s is a popular historic site, primarily for its panoramic ocean views and iceberg sightings in June.

The Mile One Centre in downtown is a concert and sporting event venue that is home to the local hockey team, the St. John's Ice Caps.

Experiencing the joyful Newfoundland dialect may be the most memorable part of your St. John's vacation. Expect to hear "Yes b'y" in a variety of contexts, meaning anything from "okay" to "no way". Without a doubt, you'll have the opportunity to say, "I just dies at you", to one of the locals. It means "you make me laugh"!
