Downtown Moncton
Aug 1, 2014
by Tammy B., Editor
Defined as the area along Main Street, downtown Moncton is predominately populated by restaurants, bars and hotels. The downtown area is a flat and walkable area of the city, with many destinations within a 10-minute walk of one another.

Several Affordable Choices Downtown
Staying in downtown Moncton does not cost much more than staying in surrounding areas. Hotels in the downtown are relatively affordable and even during the summer tourist season, hotels can be booked for less than $150 per night. Both budget-friendly and luxurious properties are available in the downtown, so travellers with a variety of needs and tastes should find something that suits them.

A budget-friendly choice, Midtown Motel & Suites, is our Editor's Pick for best value in downtown Moncton. This hotel in the west end of downtown offers rooms equipped with mini-fridges, microwaves, toasters and coffeemakers, so you can save a bit of money by eating in now and then.

For a more full-service hotel, book at the waterfront Chateau Moncton, another of our Editor's Picks. This hotel features more elegant decor, a fitness centre, an outdoor patio overlooking the river and a free breakfast. Both of our Editor's Picks provide free Wi-Fi service.

With limited parking in the downtown core, many hotels charge $10 to $12 per night for parking. However, both of our Editor's Picks, Midtown Motel & Suites and Chateau Moncton, offer free parking.

Most downtown hotels are grouped along or just off Main Street and are within a 10-minute walk of most downtown destinations.

Alternative Places to Stay
If you’re planning to drive to central Moncton, several budget-chain hotels are located along the Trans-Canada Highway. These hotels are a 15-minute drive from the downtown area and offer convenient access to the Moncton Zoo and Magic Mountain Water Park. However, if you do decide to drive into the downtown area from one of these hotels, you will have to contend with finding a parking space. Most public parking facilities in the downtown area charge $2 per hour.

Downtown Attractions
Sample a local brew on the expansive patio at the Pump House Brewery, or find a handcrafted souvenir at the Marche Moncton Market (open on Saturdays only). The historic Capitol Theatre, recently restored to its 1920's glory, is found on Main Street. Before travelling to Moncton, book tickets for one of its various performing arts shows, and enjoy the ornate interior and intimate space.

Other Area Attractions
Many area attractions are within a 5- to 10-minute drive of downtown Moncton -- and boy, does the area have a lot to offer! Shop your heart out at Champlain Mall, or play with your kids at Crystal Palace Amusement Park and Magic Mountain Water Park. Listen to live music or test your luck at the black jack tables at Casino New Brunswick. Finally, get your travelling party in a car to enjoy the famous optical illusion of your call being pulled uphill at Magnetic Hill.

You can't visit the East Coast without sampling the local food. Try the popular and award-winning seafood at Little Louis’ Oyster Bar, which is a 6-minute drive from the downtown.

Whether Moncton is just one part of your journey or your final destination, there is plenty to see and do in this Maritime city!
