Tips For Staying In Downtown London, Ontario

Originally named after the famous capital city of England, London Ontario is bordered by the Thames River on its south and west sides. London is known as the region's centre for healthcare and education, which brings in many visitors to its downtown area. If you're looking for the convenience and hospitality of a downtown hotel, there are several options to ensure visitors a comfortable stay while travelling in and through the area.

Easy Connections
Connecting to downtown London is an easy task for travellers who prefer a centrally located hotel. Most downtown London hotels are within a 3-minute drive of London's VIA Rail Station, a popular way for travellers to get to the city. Hotel Metro London, a CHG Editor's Pick for value, offers a downtown location and modern decor, is a 6-minute walk from the station and within walking distance of several restaurants, making eating out an easy task for pedestrian travellers.

London is also serviced by an extensive public bus system, which offers seven routes throughout downtown London alone. Adults, seniors and students pay $2.75 per ticket, while kids aged five through grade six pay $1.35 per ticket. All trips include a 90-minute transfer option.

Car and air travellers will want to know that the Highway 401/Highway 402 junction (which connects the city to Toronto, Sarnia and Windsor) and London International Airport (YXU) can both be found within a 20-minute drive of Hotel Metro London, as well as any other downtown London hotel.

Parking for downtown London hotels is currently about $15 per night including public lots.

School's In
Many travellers visit London because of its excellent educational institutions, and will be pleased to find that the University of Western Ontario, Fanshawe College and Brescia University College are all within a 15-minute drive of the downtown London hotels. Our Editor's Pick, Hotel Metro London, is only a 7-minute drive from University of Western Ontario.

Parents who want to stay a few days to help settle their kids in at school (or to avoid that empty-nest feeling) may enjoy a two-room suite with a full kitchen at the Residence Inn London Downtown. This highly-rated hotel offers free Wi-Fi and a hot buffet breakfast. It can be found within a 10-minute drive of Fanshawe College and the University of Western Ontario.

A Healthy Choice
As the region's centre for healthcare, London is home to several hospitals and medical centres. Everyone understands the importance of finding a comfortable hotel when travelling for health-related reasons and personally, I gravitate towards accommodations that offer creature comforts such as on-site dining and recreational facilities.

Delta London Armouries has very good guest ratings, offers an indoor pool, free Wi-Fi (to help you keep in touch with your loved ones) and an on-site restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, dinner and room service. Victoria Family Medical Centre, St. Joseph's Health Centre and Mt. Hope Centre for Long-Term Care are all within an 8-minute drive of Delta London Armouries. Delta London Armouries is also about a 9-minute walk from London's VIA Rail Station.

Have a Little Fun
Of course, London isn't all schools and hospitals. Sports fans or travellers who want to catch a concert will find Budweiser Gardens about a block (or 2-minute walk) from Hotel Metro. Theatre lovers should check what's playing at The Grand Theatre, only a 6-minute walk from Hotel Metro. In fact, even if theatre doesn't typically top your list of a good time, you should give The Grand a shot. At the time of writing, it had everything from a show about Elvis to an Addams Family musical to Shrek: The Musical, so you may be surprised!

Looking to enjoy the outdoors? There are several lovely parks along the Thames River, bordering downtown's west side, but visitors to the area will also want to check to see what's happening at Victoria Park. Situated in the centre of downtown, it often has something going on, like movies after dark on Tuesday nights in the summer. Or, visit Covent Garden Market, home to indoor and outdoor vendors, restaurants and even events (such as Forest City Beer Fest in June).

No matter what brings you to downtown London, with so much to see and do just outside of your hotel, there's always time to fit in a little fun and relaxation!
