Downtown Kelowna has a small line-up of hotels, and only a couple with good scores. There is a large variance in price for each hotel with none being similarly priced and most being quite expensive in my opinion. My pick is the only hotel I consider to offer good value for the dollar in the downtown area.

Tips For Staying In Downtown Kelowna

The peaceful, lush mountain city of Kelowna is a natural paradise for golfers, wine enthusiasts and water sport athletes. A popular BC tourist destination, Kelowna is a scenic playground for outdoor recreation and the downtown area is the hub of entertainment and beaches.

Kelowna Hotels
There are two main clusters of hotels in Kelowna. Downtown waterfront hotels are located along the lakeshore and are well suited for walking to the beach, shopping, restaurants and entertainment.

The Royal Anne Hotel offers great value and is our Editor’s Pick for downtown Kelowna. It’s not just the affordable price that makes this hotel stand out, but also all the freebies, including parking, breakfast and Wi-Fi. Some rooms feature private balconies, while on-site amenities include a fitness centre, a sauna and O'Flannigan's Pub and Deli. Finally, this hotel is within a 6-minute walk of the Okanagan boardwalk and Hot Sands Beach.

There are also many hotels along the major thoroughfare, Harvey Avenue, which runs east-west along the southern edge of downtown. It stretches east from the waterfront at City Park to become Highway 97, or west across Okanagan Lake into West Kelowna. These hotels are convenient for drivers looking to explore the area. The Royal Anne Hotel is only a 2-minute drive from Harvey Avenue.

Hotels along Harvey Avenue that are closer to the shores of Okanagan Lake are quite close to downtown attractions, while hotels farther east are situated among big-box stores and restaurants. You might be able to shave a little bit of money off of the nightly room rate by staying at one of these hotels instead of a downtown hotel, but most Kelowna hotels are in a similar price range.

There are also some hotels located on the waterfront in the more peaceful and residential area of South Kelowna, as well as some hotels scattered throughout West Kelowna.

While beautiful at any time of year, the summer is tourist season in Kelowna and hotel prices tend to rise in June, July and August -- and the downtown hotels are no exception. It's also worth noting that many downtown hotels offer free Wi-Fi and free parking, but not all do, so you should check ahead of time so that you won't get a surprise on your bill.

Travelling Around Kelowna
Since many area attractions, like golf courses and vineyards, are spread throughout the area, the easiest way to explore Kelowna is by car. The Kelowna International Airport (KLW) has several car rental kiosks for travellers arriving by plane.

If you're not staying at a downtown hotel, you will have to locate parking when you visit the downtown area. Parking in downtown Kelowna is available at parkades and along the streets. The daily maximum rate for parkades is $5, while street meters charge $1.25 per hour.

Greyhound Canada also provides long-distance bus service to Kelowna and the station is just off Harvey Avenue, east of the town centre.

Kelowna Recreation on Land & Water
Kelowna has 17 golf courses and with its mild and dry climate, it has one of the longest golf seasons in the country. Courses range from desert landscaping among the vineyards to lush rolling greens along the lake. Fees range from $34 at Mission Creek Golf Club and Orchard Green Golf Club to $145 at Predator Ridge.

For those that prefer the water to dry land, there are a variety of water sports and boat rentals for exploring Lake Okanagan, from kayaks and paddleboards, to sailboats and seadoos. Most boat rental outlets can be found near the marinas in the downtown area. Offering crystal clear water, you might even want to scuba dive or snorkel to experience the scenery below the surface.

But the gem of downtown Kelowna is its beaches. The Hot Sands Beach, adjacent to City Park in the south end, offers plenty of excitement away from the warm sand and sparkling water. Stroll along the boardwalk, sample the food from local vendors, play a game at the basketball courts, check out the skatepark, or take the kids to the playground. During the summer months, take in a live concert at the Parks Alive! stage. For a more relaxing day at the beach, head to Tugboat Bay, also in the downtown area. This quieter beach area features manicured gardens and paddleboat rentals.

Taste Kelowna Wine
Most of the area vineyards are in South and West Kelowna. Stop by the Rollingdale Wine Farm for a taste of their organic wine and a tour of the wine cellar. Tantalus Vineyard is one of the oldest in the area, and is open to the public with tastings and tours for a small charge. These are just two of the 25 vineyards that call Kelowna home!

Even after your sun tan has faded, your golf score is forgotten, and the last drop of your souvenir bottle of wine has evaporated, downtown Kelowna is a vacation destination you won't soon forget!
